No one would blame you if you thought Metal Gear Survive was simply a generic multiplayer zombie shooter game with a Metal Gear skin slapped on it for attention. For all intents and purposes, that’s exactly what it is. But Survive is so committed to the Metal Gear brand that they’ve even included an actual Metal Gear in the game.
Alright, so it isn’t anything crazy like a Metal Gear Rex or the newest Sahelanthropus, but Survive does feature playable Walker Gears, which were originally introduced in The Phantom Pain. During my time with a playable demo of the game, there was a side objective that led me to a Walker Gear. If you were a fan of the smaller, bipedal machine in The Phantom Pain, you’ll be pleased with its inclusion in Metal Gear Survive. The Walker plays exactly like it did in MGSV, but while it wasn’t really suited for stealth purposes, it seems to fit right at home in Survive.
The Walker is great for just mowing down zombies in a straight line, and performing spin kicks whenever you feel like it. Konami hasn’t stated if the large mechs (like Rex and Ray) will be featured in the game in some form or another, but at the very least, it’s nice to know that Survive does make an effort to differentiate itself from the endless slew of zombie shooter games already available on the market.
Metal Gear Survive is set to be released for PS4, Xbox One, and PC in early 2018.
