Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus Brings the Fight Against Nazis to America

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus Brings the Fight Against Nazis to America

The only real gem Bethesda had up their sleeves

Bethesda’s E3 2017 press conference was just about as lack luster as one could possibly get but right when it seemed as if all hope was lost, the show closed out with the big reveal of the latest addition to the Wolfenstein franchise. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus got a full reveal trailer complete with cinematic gold and some fast-paced glimpses at the actual gameplay footage as well. To no surprise, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus looks gorgeous, packs quite a bit of personality and brings BJ Blazkowicz back to its helm. It proved to be an exciting and incredibly satisfying first look that may have been the sole highlight of Bethesda’s press conference this year.

The new Wolfenstein takes a step far beyond European borders and imagines an America controlled by Nazis. It’ll be up to everyone’s favorite no-nonsense Nazi-obliterating protagonist to turn things around with the help of a newly formed resistance. The intense first-person shooter will take gamers on a journey across a variety of different destinations including Roswell, New Mexico and New Orleans all while they build up an expansive collection of powerful weapons that they’ll need in order to survive a nearly unrecognizable version of the U.S. Cinematic portions of the reveal show Ku Klux Klan members casually strolling down the street before giving viewers a close look at just what kind of fear the Nazis have instilled in the American people. It’s a short amount of time that sets a whole lot of ambiance and tone for the game.

While the clips of gameplay footage were cut rather quickly, it’s clear that The New Colossus has no shortage of blood and gore, keeping in line with the intense scenes that have always just seemed embedded in the game’s very DNA. If you want to survive you’ll not only be taking on Nazi soldiers but you’ll also be using a variety of weapons to take down giant robots, large alligators and what appear to be robot dogs that can shoot lasers out of their eyes. Hey, Nazi America gets intense.

Some old faces make their return in the trailer but even Wolfenstein’s cast of colorful characters can’t overshadow the new additions to the group of militant resistance fighters. The newbies certainly seem like they will be the source of some serious comedy gold. Outside of seeing some returning characters from previous games join BJ’s push to fight back against the forces sweeping across America, however, the game still feels a tad independent from its predecessors so far in terms of narrative. Only time will tell if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is slated to release on October 27 of this year and will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
