The former CEO and co-founder of Playdead, the studio behind critically acclaimed games like Limbo and Inside, is preparing to bring yet another beautiful title to the market. Dino Patti announced the new game, titled Somerville, with the help of a short teaser trailer and launching an official website for the title.
Patti partnered up with Chris Olsen, a relatively new developer who has a background in feature film animation, to create the upcoming “sci-fi adventure” game. According to a press release, Somerville will chronicle the “lives of key individuals in the wake of a global catastrophe.” The verbiage is delightfully obscure in the fact that it doesn’t let us in on what exactly the “global catastrophe” is. It isn’t clear if this will be some sort of alien invasion or a far more out-of-the-box concept. Given that this game is coming from the former co-founder of Playdead, it’s a safe bet that this game will boast a unique concept as well as a beautiful art style.
We get a sneak peek of the game’s art direction in the short teaser trailer which doesn’t give any real information about the game itself. All we are given is a glimpse of what the game will look like. You can check out the trailer here.
Somerville will be the first game to come from the newly formed UK based Jumpship studio. It was a year ago that Patti revealed he would be leaving Playdead and embarking on a new project. That project has now been revealed as the new Jumpship studio that aims to “break preconceived notions of what games can be by exploring the creative possibilities of the medium” while also making the gaming experience feel “deeply personal.” Only time will tell if Somerville lives up to the new studio’s philosophy.
Somerville has not received a release date yet.
