Ever since the series debuted on the Super Nintendo in 1992, Mario Kart’s battle mode has been a major part of the racing franchise’s appeal. This was true right up until the Wii U’s Mario Kart 8, which featured a lackluster battle mode in which players competed on circuit tracks instead of dedicated battle mode courses.
Almost three years after its release, Nintendo is about to remedy that situation next week with the release of Mario Kart 8: Deluxe on Nintendo Switch. This re-release comes packed with what looks to be a nice selection of new content, including a totally revamped battle mode featuring eight battle mode-specific courses that harken back to the mode’s heyday.
In the new trailer above, fans can get a brief glimpse of the improved battle mode in action with a brief glimpse at the 0:25 mark and again around the 0:54 mark. Of course, that doesn’t mean Nintendo wasted the remainder of the trailer. The remaining footage highlights the new characters, weapons, smart steering feature, and tougher 200cc racing mode.
Even after just a few matches, it was apparent that the new battle mode is as fun as you remember it being. Of course, you can make that judgment for yourself when Mario Kart 8: Deluxe releases on April 28.
