Famous Soccer Player Wants to Sue Konami

Konami used his likeness without permission. Uh-Oh.

Diego Maradona, a famous soccer player, is planning to take legal action against Konami for using his likeness without his permission in their sports franchise, Pro Evolution Soccer. PES 2017 offers a particular game mode that features all-star players that are now retired but considered legends of the sport. myClub mode has players like Diego Maradona, Cristiano Ronaldo,Thierry Henry, Gary Lineker and Ronald Koeman.

Pro Evolution Soccer released late last year but it seems that Maradona has just found out that his image was being used in the game. He went to his Facebook page to state the issue:

“I heard yesterday that the Japanese company Konami uses my image for its game PES 2017. Unfortunately, my lawyer Matias Morla will initiate the corresponding legal actions. I hope this is not another scam…”

We shall see what happens between the Japanese publisher and the Soccer veteran. Kotaku has reached out to Konami asking how the rights for retired players were handled.
