Honorable Mention #1: Gears of War 4
Senior Editor Chris Jecks: The Coalition didn’t stray too far from the tried and tested Gears of War formula with Gears 4, but the things they did change were ones which the series most certainly needed. Rather than taking the story in a completely different direction, The Coalition instead decided to make Gears 4 what The Force Awakens is to the Star Wars universe – a different step in a similar direction. The different step, taken by JD Fenix and co. is one that allows us a greater insight into who these characters are and the emotions they carry throughout their journey.
Alongside its campaign, Gears of War 4 also brings a number of improvements and refinements to the multiplayer and horde modes. Multiplayer’s large roster of game modes provides plenty of diversity and replayability, and is helped along by an extensive progression system. As for Horde 3.0, it’s certainly the most comprehensive version of the popular mode released to date, and while it’s class system could have been better utilized, reaching level 50 is an enthralling cooperative experience.
Gears of War 4 is a high-octane, action-packed first chapter in this new saga. What the Coalition has in store for JD and co. in the following chapters remains to be seen, but I’m already waiting with baited breath.
