Thanks to a strong week driven by  Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and the tail of Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokemon: Let’s Go, Eevee!, in which the Switch sold 281,222 units, we learn that Nintendo’s console has now passed six million units sold in the country, and is sitting precisely on 6,112,100 hybrid consoles which found a warm and loving Japanese home.

This result feels even more impressive if you consider that it was achieved in just one year and a half since the console’s release on March 3rd, 2017.

This places the Switch just over a million units under its direct rival, the PS4, which sold 7,388,617 in Japan since its launch in February 2014.

We’re just a couple of weeks into what Japanese analysts call the “Holidays Sales Battle” that begins at the beginning of December and ends with the first week of January, so there is still plenty of room for the Switch to push even higher over the short-term.

Actually, the first week of January is one of the most active of the year, as New Year is Japan’s biggest Holiday. Parents traditionally give their children gift money called “Otoshidama,” and a lot of that goes into buying new consoles and games. This means that strong sales definitely won’t stop by Christmas, and it’ll be interesting to see how close the Switch will get to seven million by then.
