SEGA wasn’t playing when it came to announcements during their Sonic the Hedgehog 25th anniversary event. They revealed the upcoming 2D title Sonic Mania (which was clarified to not be the previously teased major Sonic release in 2017), showed off the first footage on Sonic in LEGO Dimensions, and ended the show with a bang by teasing the tentatively titled “Project Sonic 2017.” Based on the teaser trailer it looks to be a doom-and-gloom version of 2011’s Sonic Generations, featuring both the newer, long-legged 3D Sonic and the old-school, black-eyed ’90s Sonic.
In addition to that, the end of the trailer where the title card would usually appear urged players to “Join the resistance Holiday 2017” and showed off the systems the game will be releasing for. You’ve got the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and most interestingly of all, Nintendo’s upcoming console the NX. Incidentally, the Wii U logo was nowhere to be found.
Project Sonic 2017 is being developed by Sonic Team, the crew behind Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations.
Sonic’s plate is pretty full at the moment. Aside from the holiday 2017 release of Project Sonic 2017, fans can also look forward to Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice on Sept. 27, Sonic in LEGO Dimensions in Nov. 2016, and Sonic Mania in Spring 2017.
