For Honor is arguably one of Ubisoft’s most intriguing new titles as it offers a ton of brutal melee combat. In the new cinematic trailer, we learn that these various historical factions have been fighting it out for centuries and that we will take the reigns as one of them. While there is no word if each faction with have their own campaign, a gameplay video does showcase the Viking’s side of the story.

In this gameplay, video users will not only be storming a Japanese fortress but engaging in a variety of combat scenarios. From storming a beachhead to rappeling up a wall, it’s clear that For Honor isn’t just focused on melee combat alone. Though what battles that were showcased are truly bloody spectacles. For Honor seems to have put a lot of nuance into its combat, as button mashing doesn’t seem like a plausible way to achieve victory.

For Honor was revealed at last year’s E3, showcasing a gameplay style dubbed “the art of battle.” The deep combat system relies on a mastery of stance switching and reading your enemy’s movements. We got our hands on the game at PAX Prime 2015, where it was clear the design is centered around the feeling of battle. Ubisoft CFO Alain Martinez calls this game a “core game” rather than a mass market game like Watch Dogs or Assassin’s Creed.

“For Honor executes real-time tactical combat phenomenally,” writes Sharon Coone in our hands-on preview. “Enemy movements are communicative enough to study without resorting to slows or awkward tells. At the same time, it’s easy to lose track of your opponent and get violently cleaved before you have a chance to lift your blade.”

For Honor is set to launch February 14th, 2017.
