World Esports Association Announced

World Esports Association will introduce a Player Council to empower pro-gamers to make league decisions.

The World Esports Association (WESA) has been founded in a joint effort between ESL—the world’s largest esports company—and a bunch of top-tier professional esports teams.

Its goal is to “further professionalize esports by introducing elements of player representation, standardized regulations, and revenue sharing for teams.” WESA intends to create “predictable” schedules for its community, in addition to an “operative Player Council.”

With members voted-in by their peers, the Council will advocate for pro-gamers in regards to “league policies, rulesets, player transfers, and more.”

“For the first time in the history of esports, players will come together to organize themselves,” said Wiktor “TaZ” Wojtas, a member of Team Virtus.Pro, “and that will enable all of us to get a real say in decisions that directly influence us.”

Eight teams in total are part of WESA’s formation—Fnatic, Natus Vincere, EnVyUs, Virtus.Pro, Gamers2, Faze, mousesports, and Ninjas in Pyjamas. The organization is reportedly in talks with other teams across Europe and North America.

WESA will focus on Counter-Strike: Global Offensive first, and move onto other games as the organization grows. ESL Pro League for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive will be the first tournament operating under WESA regulations.
