Space Jam 2 Is “Doomed,” Says Original’s Director

Space Jam director Joe Pykta isn't particularly confident in the film's sequel.

Joe Pykta, the director of the original 1996 Space Jam, is warning against LeBron James’ upcoming sequel.

“Don’t do it. It’s doomed,” Pytka told The Hollywood Reporter. “Michael Jordan was the biggest star on the planet.” Space Jam had the “perfect storm” of players and ex-players to choose from, the director added. “Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing… They had a persona that complemented the film. There are none around like that now.”

What we think he means is that James isn’t exactly known as “the greatest basketball player of all time,” like Jordan was. At least, not currently. As The Hollywood Reporter mentions, the film’s star has already been outpaced by Stephen Curry—this year’s NBA MVP. The film will likely take at least two years until it’s created, and anyone could be on top then.

Star Trek Beyond director Justin Lin will helm Space Jam 2, and co-write it with Bad Words’ Andrew Dodge and Hollywood Adventures’ Alfredo Botello. LeBron will play the starring role.

Are you excited for Space Jam 2, or are you siding with Pykta? Is Space Jam 2 doomed?
