Why the New Light Level in Destiny TTK Is Kind of Lame

The King’s Fall Raid has a normal mode and a hard mode. Normal mode drops legendary gear with Light 300-310 while the  hard mode drops legendary gear with Light 310-320. The biggest problem with this system is that your current Light level does not effect the light level of your drops.

If you’re running a raid, you already know that it’s no guarantee you’ll get the weapons or armor that you’re looking for. While hard mode and moldering shards increase your chances, there are no guarantees in the current RNG system. Up until now, that has always been a part of raiding in Destiny. But Bungie heard fans’ cries when they saw forever 29 memes and understood that the RNG system made it uncomfortably difficult for many players to reach max level despite frequent raid completions.

While many expected that these issues would be rectified with Taken King, the new Light level system seems to have made it even more difficult to max out your Light level. Imagine a level 305 guardian trying to reach 310 in normal mode in preparation for hard mode. With this current system, the player could need boots or a chest piece to level up, then run the raid five times and still only get gauntlets. But then, the problem with Light level is that even when you have 305 light gauntlets, lower Light level gauntlets will still drop.

In other words, this Guardian could run the raid 5 times or more and still not move the slightest bit forward in terms of Light. Hard mode functions under the same system and has the same flaws. As for Trials of Osiris, the drops are between Light level 300-320 but the mechanics and flaws are similar to that of King’s Fall Raid drops.

Whether normal or hard, raids can take hours to complete and it’s dissatisfying to complete them once without gain, let alone multiple times over the course of weeks. And the Trials of Osiris are competitive enough to warrant some sort of guaranteed reward as well. A simple fix would be to keep the drop rate RNG we’re used to, which makes the game difficult enough, and then change the light level RNG so that the gear drops are at or above your current Light level. At the very least, the individual drop you get shouldn’t be lower than the Light level of the item of the same type you already have equipped.

What do you think about the current Light level system in Destiny? Think it’s perfect? Agree it’s kinda lame? Be sure to let us know in the comments.
