Congrats on beating the story to Destiny: The Taken King, Guardian! You’ve successfully defeated the Hive, the House of Wolves, and now Oryx. The only question now is, what’s next for the Guardians? A lot of stuff happened during the Taken King, and no doubt that these threads will return in Destiny’s future.
SPOILERS AHOY, PEOPLE, WE’RE GONNA BE TALKING ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS DURING AND AFTER THE STORY OF THE TAKEN KING! IF YOU HAVEN’T FINISHED YET, DON’T READ ON! SERIOUSLY, DON’T.
The Taken King has continuously built up Oryx as this big, world ending threat. Everyone talks him up as a god and someone you don’t want to mess with, and Bungie’s done a great job of building him up without even devoting much attention to him in either the marketing or the campaign itself. He’s in there for sure, but his Shadows take up most of his screentime and even when you do finally see his true self for the first time, it’s going to fill you with dread. A giant, three-eyed space bat with an enormous sword is pretty scary on its own, but he’s come for the one who killed his son Crota in the Dark Below expansion. He’s pissed.
The campaign begins with death. As the Guardian goes to investigate a distress signal on Phobos, Oryx has shown up with the full power of the Hive at his disposal on the ring of Saturn. The Awoken Queen Mara Sov responds with a fleet of her own; a squad of fighters giving the dreadnought all they have, led by her brother, Prince Uldren.
But even with her power and that of the Awoken, it doesn’t end in their favor. Oryx’s dreadnought wipes out Mara’s ship and nearly all of her forces, leaving only Uldren the survivor. The dreadnought’s power is so massive that it leaves a permanent hole in Saturn’s ring. There are still many Awoken left in the Reef, but it’s possible that the pale-skinned aliens are now an endangered species, or dangerously close to it. Sure, there are Uldren and Petra still around, but is the former up to leading his people with his sister gone? Is the Reef going to be closed off to outsiders even more in future games? Or will Uldren and Petra form an alliance with the Vanguards and the Guardians? Heck, what does this mean for Awoken Guardians going forward? Will a new race be introduced to even things out?
