Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed that Pikmin 4 is in development, going on to state that the title is “very close to completion.” In an additional statement, Nintendo pretty much just reconfirmed that, yes, Pikmin 4 indeed exists.
“We can confirm that Pikmin 4 is in development but that is all we can confirm at present,” Miyamoto told Eurogamer. “It’s actually very close to completion. Pikmin teams are always working on the next one.”
It’s a weird little way for an announcement like this to pop up, as a new Pikmin is expected a bit more fanfare than quiet interview; but then again, maybe it’s fitting for one of the strangest series Nintendo’s ever continued. Pikmin 3 launched back in 2013, just a few months after the Wii U itself, and remains one of the most beloved games on the system.
No platform for Pikmin 4 was announced, and some speculate it may make its way to Nintendo’s mysterious NX rather than the Wii U. Considering we’ve already had third party titles such as Dragon Quest XI announced for the upcoming system, Nintendo may be going full speed ahead with the NX, and it’d be fitting to roll out a new Pikmin around launch.
Despite how strange this small announcement is, it’s great to see that Nintendo’s keeping this franchise going. While more than a fair share of fans fell off the Pikmin boat due to an almost ten year release gap between the second and third installments, Nintendo seems to be making a strong attempt to bring the surreal, cutesy, and often incredibly upsetting atmosphere of the series back into the limelight.
Any of you guys interested in a new Pikmin? Thoughts on what platform you reckon we’ll see this one on? Let us know in the comments!
