Mortal Kombat X Predator and Predatory/Prey Skin Pack Review: Are They Worth It?

Mortal Kombat X Predator and Predatory/Prey Skin Pack Review: Are They Worth It?

If it bleeds, we can kill it.

Back before the launch of Mortal Kombat X, NetherRealm Studios showed off the fighters that would be obtained through the Kombat Pass. One of the fighters on that list that managed to really excite fans worldwide was none other than Predator. Here was an alien hunter with interesting tech and the sense to appreciate a good fight, someone perfect for the world of Mortal Kombat X. After a long wait post launch (nearly two months) the Predator is now available to Kombat Pass holders alongside the Predator/Prey Skin Pack. But after the somewhat lackluster offerings of the last DLC bundle, many may be wondering if these packs may be worth it.

First, let’s take a look at the Predator/Prey Skin Pack. Like the skin packs that preceded it, this pack comes with alternate skins for three Kombatants: Commando Johnny Cage, Carl Weathers as Jax, and Infrared Scorpion. These skins are actually pretty clever, probably the most clever out of every pack released so far, mainly because of the Jax and Scorpion skins. Carl Weathers played Dillon in the first Predator film, and was a badass to the highest degree. Seeing Jax with his face and voice is pretty awesome, and it will make those one-on-ones against Predator that much more enjoyable. Scorpion’s new skin alone makes this pack more than worth it. Infrared Scorpion shows you just what everyone’s favorite, kunai-wielding ninja looks like through the eyes of the Predator.

Speaking of Predator, he’s this expansion’s new Kombatant, and he is one serious contender. If there is anything that NetherRealm has nailed down with Mortal Kombat X‘s expansions, it’s the variety offered by the new additions to the roster. Predator furthers this pattern with his three unique fighting styles and amazing arsenal. If you are a fan of the films containing this fierce hunter in any way, you are in for a treat.

Predator’s three variations–Warrior, Hunter, and Hish-Qu-Ten–swap between his blade, trap, and plasma abilities respectively allowing for three different types of strategic approaches. At the base of all three variations is his famous stealth and speed, although he isn’t overly quick like some of the other fighters like Reptile and Mileena. But this lends to the balance of his fighting style that makes Predator such a remarkable addition.

Predator is a hunter first and foremost, his attacks all have a substantial weight to them, and their distinct speed give them a sort of methodical flair. Every attack (even if you’re button mashing) comes across as well planned through his animations and execution. Whether you’re lining up a shot using the Plasma Caster special, or pushing unsuspecting opponents into a snare, there’s a certain confidence that the Predator commands with every move.

On top of everything, Predator just looks cool. While Jason Voorhees and Tanya look exactly as you’d expect them, it seems as if the developers went the extra mile when crafting this alien menace. From the shape of his skull during X-Ray attacks, to his creepy laughter after winning a round, to the animal skulls dangling around his neck, Predator just looks and sounds so damn mean, and it is a thing of absolute wonder.

It’s odd, because in a way, although each of them are great, the previous two DLC characters pale in comparison to this newest Mortal Kombat X fighter. He’s powerful, strategic, and quick. Once again, the devs have managed to take a licensed character and made it fit in perfectly with the Mortal Kombat universe. If you need proof of just how well, make sure to complete a Klassic Tower using Predator, and you’re sure to grin from ear to ear.

For the third wave of DLC, Mortal Kombat X has found a solid groove that one can only hope they keep going into the release of their final Kombat Pass DLC. A character that is definitely worth being excited over, and the most impressive skins to date, round out the latest offerings.

Even if you aren’t a fan of Predator himself, playing as him will still make you appreciate the attention to detail brought to Mortal Kombat X. If there was ever any add-on content worth purchasing, this is definitely it. Get ready to let your inner hunter loose on July 14 when Predator and the newest skin pack are made available to everyone.

Just a wandering character from Brooklyn, NY. Fan of horrible Spider-Man games, anime, and corny jokes.
