Since Kingdom Hearts III was officially revealed to be in development during Sony’s 2013 E3 press conference, we’ve barely seen anything new from it. Of course, the company had the two compilations of Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 and 2.5 ReMIX to promote in the mean time, but the latter of those has been out for more than half a year now, so many have been expecting an update on the threequel for some time now.
Finally, during Square Enix’s E3 2015 press conference, they gave us the Kingdom Hearts III update we’ve been waiting so patiently for.
The first big announcement is that Disney’s Tangled is the first new world to be confirmed for Kingdom Hearts III. While no footage of the film’s characters were shown, a new trailer did showcase some of the landscapes including the mountainous region surrounding Rapunzel’s tower.
New and familiar Heartless enemies were both present, as well as the return of classic Kingdom Hearts battles featuring the trio of Sora (touting a taller, more sporty look), Donald, and Goofy.
There were multiple exciting shots of Sora utilizing some new keyblade transformations, firing away at his enemies with long-range firearm attacks. We also got a look at Sora riding around a chariot in mid-air that was pulled by Hercules’ Pegasus. There were also quick snippets of Sora facing off against the Rock Titan from Hercules (also seen in the first Kingdom Hearts), but we’ve seen similar footage previously already.
The entire trailer was built around a game of chess between what looked to be a young Master Eraqus and Master Xehanort. While all text on-screen was in Japanese, all the vocals in the trailer were in English, indicating recording for Kingdom Hearts III is already well under way.
Kingdom Hearts III is currently in development for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. No release window has been given yet.
