Today, Microsoft has put out a new trailer for Rise of the Tomb Raider, which puts an emphasis on Lara Croft’s two climbing axes and the winter environment. Like the trailer says, Lara’s searching for the secrets of the world, and given our protagonist, that’s not as easy as you’d expect. It’s short, but it definitely works in building hype for their showing at E3 in two weeks.
2013’s Tomb Raider came out to rave reviews and as of April of this year, sold 8.5 million copies. Our reboot took Lara Croft and the shipmates of the Endurance to the island of Yamatai in search of the kingdom that once existed there. Separated from her friends and on her own on the hellish island, Lara’s forced to shed her privileged exterior and become a hardened killer to survive the horrors of the island and the stranded island natives to save her friend Sam.
Rise of the Tomb Raider picks up years later, with Lara coping with PTSD after seeing her friends die, killing a bunch of people, and supernatural experiences on Yamatai. Her experience was covered up by the Trinity organization, so she’s on a mission to prove she didn’t make it up by heading to Siberia to find the ancient city Kitezh, which may hold the truth to immortality. Naturally, Trinity’s searching for Kitezh as well, and just like the last Tomb Raider, Lara’s going to have to survive whatever Trinity and Siberia throws at her to become the hero we all know and love. Just one who can also take falling down a mountain without breaking a bone in her body. Y’know, typical Tomb Raider things.
Rise of the Tomb Raider hits the Xbox One and 360 sometime this fall, possibly next year. It may come to other consoles later. Eventually.
