Dreamfall Chapters Book Two: Rebels – (that’s a mouthful) – has gone live on Steam today. Dreamfall Chapters is an ongoing episodic adventure game that is a sequel to 1999’s The Longest Journey and 2006’s Dreamfall.
The Longest Journey series is set in a pair of parallel universes: Stark, a futuristic cyberpunk-ish version of Earth, and Arcadia, a high-fantasy world of magic. Chapters takes place after the 2006 game Dreamfall. Two of the three playable protagonists in Chapters were also playable in Dreamfall -Zoë Castillo and Kian Alvane. The plot of Chapters revolves around a criminal conspiracy that aims at enslaving the residents of both Stark and Arcadia by stealing their dreams.
Funcom, the original developer of The Longest Journey and Dreamfall announced that it was developing Dreamfall Chapters in 2007, but dropped it’s development plans in 2012 to focus on their MMO The Secret World. Funcom then decided to turn over The Longest Journey IP to it’s original writer and director Ragnar Tørnquist and his newly founded studio, Red Thread Games.
Dreamfall Chapters was crowd-funded by Kickstarter and quickly surpassed its goal, winding up raising over $1.5 million. The game project has also received substantial funding from the Norwegian Film Fund.
One quirk of the release is that players must have completed Book One in order to play Book Two. Tørnquist wrote a statement to Kickstarter backers saying, “There’s no way around this: we rely on all the choices you made in the first episode. If you’ve uninstalled and removed your game files, these must be restored before you can progress.”
Along with Steam, Chapters is available DRM-free on GOG.com and the Humble store.
