This is Why You Shouldn’t Play Darkest Dungeon

The salt is real.

If you haven’t hopped onto the huge early access trend that is Darkest Dungeon, you are sincerely missing out. It is potentially one of the best games to come out of early access in years, and one of the most popular games in the early-year drought of AAA titles, for good reason too! The game is a side-scrolling, turn-based RPG that is a masterpiece of dungeon crawling. Where Darkest Dungeon excels is in its roguelite elements, similar to that of its peers in Binding of Isaac: Rebirth and FTL. It engages you with simple, largely intuitive, yet dramatically scaling combat and strategies with a dash or randomized elements and procedural generation to make every experience a little bit different from the last.

Part of Darkest Dungeon’s RNG randomness, however, is absolutely salt inducing. Want to open that treasure chest? Congratulations, you have syphilis. Want to send your stressed out knight to the tavern to take off the depression of a fallen teammate off their shoulders with a pint? Looks like they went on a drunken bender and have mysteriously left town, so you’ll need to find someone else to fill your party. And don’t forget to bring some potions and torches, or otherwise know when it’s time to back out of the dungeon and call it quits, because if you enter a fight you can’t win, death is permanent in Darkest Dungeon.

This salt-factory of a game has infuriated countless people on Twitch already. But none so much as Ezekiel_III. Up against a fearsome foe in Darkest Dungeon, he used the majority of his party to take down the largest of the beasties he was combatting. His team of adventurers was in a sorry state, and were whittled down to two out of four people, each on what Darkest Dungeon refers to as “death’s door,” a last moment to save your characters before they’re gone forever. The stress mechanic of Darkest Dungeon betrayed Zeke, giving the fearsome beast who was on it’s last hit before dying a critical strike on the whole group. And, well, the results speak for themselves.

That poor, poor keyboard. Like Zeke’s characters from Darkest Dungeon, the keyboard did not survive it’s brutal assault. It was fortunately replaced later. To be fair, this isn’t the first time Zeke has raged out at a frustrating video game. But Darkest Dungeon is one of the easiest games to bring out this level of rage from many a gamer. You can see the brutally hilarious display of rage and salt on Zeke’s Twitch stream here.
