Director Tetsuya Nomura has revealed that Kingdom Hearts III will be switching from Square Enix’s Luminous Engine to Epic Game’s Unreal Engine 4.
“Due to having switched to Unreal Engine 4 for various reasons, we’re having trouble on some parts as far as rendering goes, but with help from Epic Games, progress is going smoothly,” Nomura told Famitsu. (translation from Siliconera)
Is Kingdom Hearts III in trouble? Not according to Nomura. He assured that development is still on schedule.
I’m don’t know how hard it is to switch to an entirely different game engine, but according to another report by Siliconera, the previous engine was giving them some trouble. If this lets them make the game that they want to make, with no restrictions because of the engine, then it sounds like good news to me.
Kingdom Hearts III will be released on the Xbox One and Playstation 4, and has no announced release date.
