So you’re a developer working on the upcoming LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, and you’re looking for something to bring in the next wave of kids. Here’s an idea: get a guy most known for directing R-rated movies, making podcasts, and smoking prodigious amounts of marijuana to be a character in it.
Yes, ’90s indie film icon Kevin Smith is going to be appearing in the upcoming LEGO Batman 3 as himself. In spite of not having made a decent movie in well over a decade, he maintains a large following thanks to his other enterprises, among them his work as a podcast svengali and comic book writer.
The decision to have him featured in this game seems an odd choice, what with this being a series primarily designed for children or at the very least people born after his period of cultural relevance had passed. Then again, many those kids who will be playing LEGO Batman may have fathers who fondly remember his earlier movies such as Clerks and Mallrats, so in that sense this could turn out to be a clever marketing move.
LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham is scheduled for release on November 11, 2014 on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, … literally everything.
