Super Mario 3D World Hands-On Impressions

Super Mario 3D World Hands-On Impressions

Seldom do I play a game that leaves me with the itch to play it immediately after putting the controller down. Usually I’ll walk away, enjoy the time I spent, and maybe go back to it later. But when I checked out Super Mario 3D World, I couldn’t keep the smile off my face.

If you’re familiar with Super Mario Bros. 2 (my second favorite Super Mario game), you’ll be slapped in the face with nostalgia the second you start up Super Mario 3D World with friends. Three people can join you in this new 3D Mario adventure. Toad, Peach, Luigi, and of course, Mario, reprise their roles as well as abilities for this one. Luigi jumps high, Peach can float, Mario… what the hell does Mario do? And Toad, the clearly superior one, is the fastest.

It’s basically Super Mario 3D Land, but on the Wii U, and capable of co-op. So basically, it’s incredible. You’ll want to convince friends to play with you. Get strangers to, who cares, just get others.

I could not stop smiling and saying, “Oh my GAD!” It’s fast paced as you’re rushing through the levels with everyone and grabbing all the coins. While it’s very much a co-op game, there’s competition in that the game actually acknowledges the best player each level. You’re awarded a crown that you can take with you on the next level. Basically, you’re going to want to crush your teammates each and every time you play.

The levels Andy and I played through involved everything from turning into cats (which allowed us to climb up certain walls to get sneaky secrets) and riding a dragon-water-creature-thing through a river that had us bobbing around to steer it. The experience reminded me of Mario Party, which is a huge plus. Everything played as well as you’d expect, and the person with the tablet had a God-like ability to touch the environment to shake out secrets. I don’t know if that’s the only perk the tablet wielder has. Probably. But who cares because the rest is amazing.

If you’ve played Super Mario 3D Land (let’s get real here, if you’ve played any Super Mario game, really) you know how this plays. You know it plays amazingly. Now add in three other people and shenanigans and you won’t be able to wait until later this year for its release.
