GameInformer is reporting Disney has closed their publisher LucasArts. The official statement from Disney (which recently acquired LucasFilm and LucasArts) reads as follows:
“After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.”
The fate of the upcoming Star Wars 1313 game is up in the air, even though the demo was well received at E3 last year. A representative at Disney has said that they are considering options of external development and publishing for ongoing projects. The future for previously successful series such as Knights Of The Old Republic, the Jedi Knight/Dark Forces games, and Rogue Squadron is likewise murky. Our sympathies are with all the LucasArts employees that lost their jobs.
