[News] Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown Gets a lot of DLC

[UPDATE: Clarification of the game’s pricing structure has been sent to me by a Sega PR representative.  The 2 “additional” bundles are in fact bundles of all of the $5 content with certain characters being separated in to others.  Purchasing individually still would be $5 a person and I’d be remiss to think you would do that for more than 1 or 2 characters.]

Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown is the greatly updated version of Virtua Fighter 5 that has been in arcades throughout Japan for years.  It adds two characters to the roster with Jean Kujo and everyone’s favorite sumo Taka-Arashi.  Unlike other versions of fighters, this game will be coming out as a downloadable XBLA and PSN game instead of an upgrade or full retail title.  The way they’ll offset this is by having a large number of downloadable content.

The content will be offered at $5 or 400 MS points per character for costumes.  With 19 characters total, it’s easy to see where Sega will be making their money off the release.  There will also be 2 bundle packages that will release for half of the rosters characters at $15 or 1200 MS points.  Sega is making a point to call these additional bundles so until they clarify, I’m going to assume this is another pack instead of a reduced bundle. These bundles will be available with the game when it retails for $15 or 1200 MS points on June 5, 2012.

What we seem to be seeing for the full game is a total price of $140.  If the bundle packs are combo reductions, then it only works out to $45 total.

While I’m inclined to argue that the DLC offers a huge number of customization options for the fighters, I’m not going to realistically spend $140 on Virtua Fighter.  This is 600-950 customization items per character, so I can’t sit back and say that a pack won’t be worth it to make your character YOUR character.  I’m just surprised they are planning to charge so much when they had such a nice unlockable mode in Virtua Fighter 5.

I’ve included the full press release below with a new trailer highlighting the options available for the title.
