Since its crowdfunding campaign, fans have been eagerly awaiting the single-player mode for the Friday the 13th video game. While it’s a bit late, developer Gun Media has finally released a trailer to give players a taste of the murder-y fun to come.

In the trailer, the developers show off a tutorial level of the mode wherein we see Jason happening upon two teenagers near a broken down car. After silently observing for a moment and waiting for his chance, Jason ambushes one and impales him upon a tree. Then he returns to the other and smashes him under the car in classic gory Friday the 13th fashion. All of which was “just a taste” according to the developer commenting in the video.

While brief, the trailer shows much promise. The game’s single-player is apparently meant to be more akin to a series of challenges, but if the trailer is any indication these challenges will have their own mini-narratives built on the same sorts of situations and tropes one could find in the Friday the 13th movies. It’s very tongue in cheek and does a good job of getting the player into Jason’s menacing shoes.

Prior to this, the game was exclusively a multiplayer affair, pitting Jason again multiple campers in a bid to escape before the masked menace kills them all. What the game lacked in a story or single-player mode it made up for with plenty of love and references for the source material and a brutal gameplay format every bit as bloody and over the top as the films themselves. Though with this trailer, Gun Media has helped to assure its player base that more is still to come.

While a final release date hasn’t yet been announced, when it finally does drop the single-player update will be available for free to all players. The game can be played on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Unless you’ve been sequestered under a rock at some point in the last few years, there is a good chance you’ve heard of a certain little independent game franchise known as Five Nights At Freddy’s. FNAF, designed by Scott Cawthon, was a viral sensation that took the gaming world by storm back in 2014. It was an overnight success story that in just four short years the series has spawned seven different games, two novels, hordes of merchandise, fanart, and yes, even a movie adaptation. A movie adaptation that just found its director incidentally.

Courtesy of an article by Deadline, it has been revealed that the director of the upcoming Five Nights At Freddy’s movie will be none other than Chris Columbus. Fans may recognize that name, as Columbus has a long, successful track record in the film world, having helped to spearhead multiple beloved classics including Gremlins, Home Alone one and two, Mrs. Doubtfire, and perhaps most notably of all the first three Harry Potter movies. With such a history of making great films, the news comes as a much-needed reassurance for FNAF fans who have had little to go on up until this point.

The FNAF movie was first announced back in 2015 and has since spent most of its time in development hell with infrequent updates. Ultimately, horror studio Blumhouse Productions ended up acquiring the rights to make the movie. Fans may know Blumhouse for many of the most successful modern horror movies such as Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and Get Out. In addition, creator Scott Cawthon has stayed on as a producer for the film to assure quality.

Further details on the movie, however, and what it will feature remain unclear. The Five Nights At Freddy’s games always featured minimalist storytelling with a deep emphasis on an extensive lore going on behind the scenes. Neither of which are easy to adapt to the big screen. The film appears to be an adaptation of the first game, pitting a late-night security guard against the killer animatronics of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria; but beyond that it’s hard to say. Details have remained vague and the base game doesn’t have enough direct plot for a proper one-to-one adaptation. So some liberties are to be expected.

Still, for all who were worried about the film the announcement of Columbus’s inclusion is a much-needed relief. With the dream team of Scott Cawthon, Chris Columbus, and Blumhouse productions the film is lining up to potentially be a standout video game adaptation. Though for now it’s best to wait and see. There are rumors of a 2018 release date for the film, but as of right now nothing official has been announced on the matter.

This just in, microtransactions make an absurd amount of money. How much money? Well for example, according to Activision Blizzard’s quarterly earnings report they made roughly $4 billion dollars from online purchases alone in 2017.

The “in-game net bookings” that the company reported includes various types of online purchases such as DLC, loot boxes, and in-app purchases on mobile games. In the fourth quart of 2017 alone Activision Blizzard made over $1 billion via in-game net bookings. Roughly half of that number comes courtesy of the company’s subsidiary King, best known for mobile games such as Candy Crush. The other $2 billion comes from Activision Blizzard’s console and PC efforts, namely from games such as Call of Duty: WWII, World of Warcraft, and of course, Overwatch.

Warcraft has always had a pretty robust player economy, but this year saw Call of Duty introduce a new loot box-based microtransaction system to the franchise. Not to mention the progenitor of the loot box system Overwatch which has continued to perform well with new events and cosmetics released regularly. Similarly Electronic Arts, itself another company that heavily features microtransactions in most of its games, reported $787 million in its quarterly earnings report as well in spite of the massive Star Wars: Battlefront II debacle.

For as much as gamers seem to dislike microtransactions and for how dirty of a term games as a service has become, the numbers don’t lie. These business practices are making more money than ever according to the earnings reports. Similarly impressive reports are coming from Take-Two Interactive who cited record-breaking years for both GTA Online and NBA 2K18. At the end of the day, despite all the controversies and consumer backlash, the money has spoken and it says there are plenty of people out there eager to spend their money on these sorts of games.

The Evolution Championship Series has been the biggest stage for fighting games for sixteen impressive years; however, for the first time since its inception EVO will not be featuring a Marvel vs Capcom game as one of its premier tournaments. Instead, it will be replaced by none other than the up and coming Dragon Ball FighterZ. The news comes courtesy of the event’s official announcement for its tournament line-up.

While it hasn’t always been the main focus of EVO, Marvel vs Capcom has always had some kind of presence at the event from its very inception back in 2002 with Marvel vs Capcom 2. It was a good fifteen year run for the franchise, but with Marvel vs Capcom Infinite’s mixed reception and the rampant rising popularity of FighterZ it’s a run that has finally ended.

This year EVO will feature Street Fighter 5 Arcade Edition, Tekken 7, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Super Smash Bros. Melee, BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2, Injustice 2, and Dragon Ball FighterZ all as premier main stage events. Of those, Street Fighter, Tekken, FighterZ, Guilty Gear, and Smash Bros Melee will all be featured as a part of the Arena finals.

There is hope for Marvel vs Capcom however. There is still a chance the franchise can be included in some kind of side event since the schedule hasn’t been announced for those yet. Considering the franchise’s legacy it is most likely it will still be at EVO in some way. Though for now at least, its time in the spotlight is at an end. It’s time for the new hotness to take center stage.

The EVO 2018 World Finals take place Aug 3-5 in Las Vegas.

Love is in the air with Valentine’s a mere week away and it looks like Nintendo of America is getting into the spirit of things by answering the question all gamers have been feverishly asking for decades. Are you Mario’s type? Depending on how you do in this official Nintendo quiz, you very well might be.

The quiz is very tongue-in-cheek in asking players cute questions like what would you like in a Valentine’s Day card? A letter written in beautiful Italian? A map so you might find your lover? Or perhaps an adorable doodle? That sort of thing. While you can find those sorts of quizzes all over the internet, it’s rare to see an official company weigh in with one. Still, it’s nice to see Nintendo of America having a bit of fun with the season.

Are you perhaps Link’s new princess? A new hero for Princess Peach to spend time with? Or maybe you can spend time with Kirby and…eat stuff I guess…? It’s a cute distraction that won’t take but a few minutes and answering five questions, but it’s nice to see some unique things like this out there.

Nintendo is far from the only company to do this sort of thing of course. Last year a number of games partook in Valentine’s Day, as many surely will this year as well. Nintendo just happened to get a head start on it.

For a few months now a number of DLC codes for Gun Media’s Friday the 13th had been sold on eBay for upwards of $100. Kickstarter Backer exclusive codes as it turned out, stolen Kickstarter backer codes.

To offer some context, Friday the 13th was a video game adaptation of the film series that was successfully crowdfunded in 2015. To help encourage people to donate money, Gun Media offered some backers exclusive costumes for the game. All well and good until a few days ago when a Redditor investigated some DLC codes that were available on eBay and documented his findings in a detailed Reddit post. While they initially assumed the DLC codes were just something a backer snagged early on to flip for a profit, after much searching the Redditor came to the conclusion that the codes were in fact stolen.

Gun Media responded to the Reddit thread, saying:

“We previously assumed that backer-content keys being sold on eBay were the same as you; a fan who got in early and purchased extra keys. After reviewing the information that you have posted, it is absolutely clear that this is not the case. With some investigation, we quickly determined that the keys being sold come from a theft at one of our distribution partners.”

While they did not offer specific names, Limited Run Games, who worked with Gun Media on the physical backer rewards for Friday the 13th, publicly acknowledged that the theft was likely on their end. Most likely the culprit was one of Limited Run’s temporary contract workers who stole the codes and flipped them on eBay for a profit. In addition, investigations on the eBay seller’s sales history revealed other codes and products tied to Limited Run. Once they first noticed a discrepancy in their physical goods in December the company promptly stopped using temporary workers. In order to help combat this in the future they intend to move to a more secure office next week.

In the mean time, Gun Media has said that they will be disabling any unredeemed codes that they suspect may have been stolen. All the DLC codes listed on eBay have since been taken down, though it is estimated that the thief managed to make over $20,000 dollars off of the codes.

With as popular and fun as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has proven itself to be this last year, it should come as no surprise that the game has had its fair share of problems with cheaters. As the game has grown its player base, so too has the number of cheaters been on the rise. Thankfully, the team behind PUBG just revealed in a new post that an update is on the way to hopefully address and stop these nefarious cheaters.

In the post, the team explains how they are aware of the issue and have since formed a team to combat cheating in PUBG. As a result, come next week they’ll be rolling out an update that will feature an early version of their solution. The solution, as they explain, will be mainly focused on blocking any sort of unauthorized programs from interfering with the game. This is set to focus on various helper programs that aid their a player’s gameplay or alter the game’s graphics in some way. These sorts of programs adjust the in-game files to suit whatever the player wants, they explain.

However, this upcoming update is still early in development. The team will continue to refine their anti-cheat measures, but in the mean time it looks like some harmless programs may also be caught in the crossfire for the time being. The team says they will be checking the list of programs blocked on test servers and will work to allow for the use of harmless programs that don’t affect the core gameplay in any way. It won’t be perfect at first, but they promise to continue developing and improving the system long after it’s introduced.

All in all a promising soft launch for PUBG that has been a long time coming. The loss of Account Sharing on Steam is unfortunate, but it’s necessary in the fight against cheaters. Below is a more detailed list of the anti-cheat measures being added in taken from the game’s Steam page:

<In-game Report Function>
We are gradually upgrading our in-game reporting features to effectively review your reports and accurately verify cheat activities. An internal system is being built as well to allow us to investigate reported content faster and more accurately. If you encounter a player you suspect of cheating, please use the report function. Please do bear in mind that when watching a replay, sometimes the replay footage and the actual gameplay may differ due to some bugs or network issues.

<File Modification>
If you tamper with the game files, your game access may be blocked, especially if you delete, modify or manipulate in any way the files affecting any of the game systems and mechanics.

<Account Sharing>
We have an announcement for those of you using family sharing on Steam. We had allowed this feature so that the account holders who own PUBG can use their character with other Steam accounts if they wanted to. However, we have decided to deactivate this feature because we have identified a number of vulnerabilities that are being exploited. Please understand that we are introducing this measure to fight abuse and ensure a fair environment.

Fans can’t expect Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom until March 23, 2018, but with the game right around the corner Bandai Namco has seen fit to release a new trailer to help keep anticipation on the rise after the game’s many delays. The trailer is roughly three minutes long and showcases the different gameplay modes players can expect when the game finally launches.

Spread across the trailer we see more glimpses of the game’s battle system, as well as two mode modes built around RTS style combat and another for building your own town called Kingdom Mode. The combat seems much more active this time around with players taking a more dynamic role in how they go about defeating enemies. As opposed to the original Ni No Kuni where players played a much more passive and tactical role in combat.

Completely new to the game is the addition of Kingdom Mode however, and in the trailer we see that you can invest in your town, build it, recruit people, choose who lives where, and steadily upgrade it as you progress along the game. All of which seems to tie into the RTS-style army battles that pit you and your forces against the hordes of monsters as you lead the charge to slay them. How much time you invest into your town as well as your strategies in leading your army will determine the sort of experience you can expect.

Ni No Kuni II is slated to release on PS4 on March 23.

Until Microsoft Fixes its Exclusives Problem, Nothing Else Matters http://twinfinite.net/2018/02/microsofts-exclusives-problem/ http://twinfinite.net/2018/02/microsofts-exclusives-problem/#respond Thu, 01 Feb 2018 14:44:27 +0000 http://twinfinite.net/?p=328736 Microsoft has had one big problem with the Xbox One.

The post Until Microsoft Fixes its Exclusives Problem, Nothing Else Matters appeared first on Twinfinite.

]]>
The rumor recently broke out that Microsoft was looking to acquire some big game studios to help bolster its first-party lineup. While still very much a rumor, there are sources in the Polygon article who seem to verify that at the very least Microsoft is trying to tackle the issue. Which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, given how the Xbox One’s lack of exclusives has been the main sticking point among gamers for years now.

Since its launch back in 2013, the Xbox One has performed respectably all things considered, having sold an estimated 35 million units. In a bubble that seems impressive, but when compared to the PS4’s monstrous 70+ million units sold it’s a mere pittance. Initial customer backlash about the always-online connectivity and the forcibly integrated Kinect saw the Xbox One stumble out of the gate when it launched and since then its been trying and failing to catch up to the PS4.

As more and more PS4 units were sold and the Xbox One lagged at launch, many developers flocked to the most successful console, starting the perpetual cycle that has haunted Microsoft since. The Xbox One is a fine system with many great games and even some truly standout exclusives, but even so, it has been unable to shake the stigma of not having enough of them. Why should gamers buy a console for one or two exclusives when that shiny PS4 over there has several times as many? And if you already have a PS4, why, look over there at that shiny Nintendo Switch that just came out with half a dozen amazing exclusives.

It’s as much a quality issue as it is a quantity issue as well. Games like Gears of War 4 and Halo 5 are great and all, but they never landed with quite the same resounding cultural splash as something like NieR: Automata or Horizon Zero Dawn. Cuphead was a true gem, granted, but that was just one game. You don’t hear those sorts of widespread talks being thrown around for things like Halo Wars 2 or Forza Motorsport 7. A console’s exclusives can be and often are great, but the conversation around them is just as important and the conversation dominating the Xbox One has often felt like its predominantly negative. Or at the very least lacking when compared to the talks around the PlayStation 4 and even the Nintendo Switch.

cuphead, pluckhead

Instead of gamers focusing on the positives of the Xbox One, more often than not the conversation is on all the things it fails at. Scalebound’s unfortunate cancellation comes to mind, serving both as a heavy loss to Microsoft’s potential library and yet another thing gamers could point to and say it somehow proves the Xbox One is a terrible console. It doesn’t of course, but it’s yet another hurdle on the already steep hill Microsoft has been made to climb.

Its been stuck in this cycle of not selling enough units to get a bunch of exclusives while also not having enough exclusives to move a bunch of units. A cycle that ultimately killed the Wii U and has loomed threateningly over the Xbox One for years now, though Microsoft’s console is saved by third-party support.

Microsoft has tried to combat this in a number of ways, perhaps most notable being the introduction of the Windows Play Anywhere system. A system that would allow anyone to play Microsoft exclusives on a Windows 10 computer and vice versa. This did indeed raise game sales, but also shot the Xbox One in the foot a bit as well since now gamers didn’t even need a console to play Microsoft exclusives anymore.

However, not everything is all doom and gloom for Microsoft. Competition breeds innovation as they say, and the company’s struggling position has made it far more open to new or experimental ideas. Cross-play is one such idea. Microsoft was among the first to make a serious push for cross-play between all consoles and PC. It also serves as a rare instance of almost everyone being on Microsoft’s side on an issue with the PS4 and its refusal to allow cross-play remaining unpopular with gamers. In attempting to innovate, they even introduced the idea of enhanced consoles and released the Xbox One X to allow console players to enjoy a 4K experience.

Forza 7

In fact, Microsoft has made a number of incredibly pro-consumer decisions in the last couple years to combat their initial negative reputation in that same vein. Backwards compatibility, for instance, was one of the things gamers lamented the loss of with the current console generation; and it created a niche that Microsoft was more than happy to fill. In fact, they took that idea even further by really upping their Xbox Games with Gold lineup to help make Xbox Live all the move appealing as well.

As recently as last week Microsoft announced changes for its Netflix-style Game Pass that would allow players to play brand new first-party Xbox One games at launch. Not only a gutsy, unprecedented move on a platform’s part, but also one that presents customers with one heck of a good deal. It will still need to be seen whether or not Game Pass can hold up to the promise and if the industry can accept it, but it has the potential to create a completely new type of business model that may even inspire new types of gaming experiences. If nothing else, the announcement has generated a lot of positive discussion and goodwill for Microsoft.

Then there is the aforementioned exclusives problem which, thankfully, Microsoft seems gearing up to fully address. Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2 both look like promising games, Cuphead was a critical darling, and if the acquisition rumors bear fruit then Microsoft could be set to gain some pretty big developers under its belt. Developers who, incidentally, could then have their new games featured on that fancy new Game Pass. Microsoft has made a lot of pro-consumer decisions, but until it starts getting better exclusives under its belt, it’ll continue to be difficult to compete with other consoles.

It has been a rough few years for the Xbox One, thanks in no small part to its issues with exclusives. Though with 2018, it’s actually looking like Microsoft may just finally be finding its footing to take care of this “Xbox has no games” problem once and for all. Time will tell of course, but right now Microsoft has been on a roll, and the Xbox One has been doing better and better in the market. Though the future of the Xbox One is still uncertain, especially when it comes to the exclusivity problem, at the very least Microsoft is acknowledging the problem and is taking steps to ameliorate the situation.

Dragon Ball FighterZ

FighterZ

With the release of Dragon ball FighterZ, there’s been a lot of hype around Dragon Ball lately. Not too surprising considering, just how important the franchise is in anime; but what is also surprising is just how much of a prolific video game franchise it has been. DBZ has released dozens of games over the years. Some good. Some bad. But with the release of FighterZ now seems like a good time to look back at some of the highlights. Starting with none other than FighterZ itself.

Despite having literally dozens of fighting games split across several different console generations and series, Dragon Ball has had shockingly few “good” fighting games. This isn’t to say the games are bad at all, but they often lack the depth or nuance that comes with most other fighters out there. Street Fighter, Tekken, even Smash Bros has a lot of technical skill involved, but Dragon Ball? A lot of their games were pretty simple and unbalanced when all is said and done.

Then comes FighterZ, a game built not only to be accessible, but rewarding to the technically skilled players as well. It’s a game filled with fanservice, an excellent fighting system, and a surprisingly robust story mode. It’s very likely that in the long run FighterZ is gonna become a standout among Dragon Ball games. Possibly even the best.

As if Monster Hunter World couldn’t look more exciting, now Capcom seems to be sweetening the deal even more for its players. Street Fighter fans will soon be able play as either Ryu or Sakura in the game, courtesy of a couple of Event Quests.

The two characters will be introduced into the game as character skins that can be equipped as an armor set. Regardless of a character’s gender, equipping the full armor set for either Ryu or Sakura will allow them to become either of those characters, complete with fully voiced lines and unique character animations. According to the company’s update, the full public release of the two isn’t set for some time.

However, PS4 players will be able to access the Ryu skin early if they have a save file for Street Fighter V on their console. Having that save file will open up an option to complete an Event Quest called “Down the Dark, Muddy Path”. Completing that quest will give you the necessary materials needed to go to the smithy and craft your very own Ryu skin. Players that don’t own a PS4 or a save file for Street Fighter V will be forced to wait longer. Capcom promises that the Event Quests will be part of the normal quest circulation for all versions of the game eventually, but haven’t given a concrete date on when players can expect that.

Also coming with the two characters are their iconic Hadoken and Shoryuken attacks. Well, sort of. You can use them, but they are considered premium gestures and will retail for $3.99 U.S each. Street Fighter V has also returned the favor in its game, offering a few Monster Hunter World character skins for its players. For the full reveal trailer on Ryu and Sakura, check it out here.

Monster Hunter World is currently available on PS4 and Xbox One with a PC release slated for the Fall.

Report: Anthem Delayed to 2019 http://twinfinite.net/2018/01/anthem-delayed-to-2019/ http://twinfinite.net/2018/01/anthem-delayed-to-2019/#respond Wed, 24 Jan 2018 22:21:44 +0000 http://twinfinite.net/?p=327347 The pressure is on for Bioware.

The post Report: Anthem Delayed to 2019 appeared first on Twinfinite.

]]>
Those who have been eagerly awaiting Bioware’s upcoming Anthem since it’s E3 trailer may want to pace themselves a bit, as it looks like the game’s release has been delayed to 2019. The news comes courtesy of a report by Kotaku’s Jason Schreier.

In the report, which goes into great detail on the situation, Schreier discusses the future of Anthem and how its development team has begun to double down on the game in response to increased pressure. It goes at length about how Bioware has begun pooling a majority of its resources and staff into the project and how there’s a growing sense among the development team that the future of their studio hinges on Anthem’s performance. In order to help assure Anthem is as good as it possibly can be, this will almost certainly lead to a delay to give the game added development time.

As you may recall, Bioware’s last major release was Mass Effect: Andromeda, a game that ultimately failed to live up to fan expectations. The game underperformed and, judging by those Schreier cites, because of that and EA’s subsequent backlash with Star Wars: Battlefront II there’s now a lot riding on Anthem’s success.

Schreier wrote:

As one developer told me, there’s a belief that if Anthem doesn’t live up to EA’s expectations, BioWare will look very different in the future, especially after the disappointment of Mass Effect Andromeda led to EA absorbing BioWare Montreal into the studio EA Motive.

Focusing most of their resources onto one game as it approaches release is nothing new for Bioware. In fact, the same practice was used for Dragon Age: Inquisition and Mass Effect: Andromeda. However, after the troubling year EA had in 2017, tensions are mounting within Bioware for their take on a Destiny-style shooter to be a massive hit. With any luck, the added development time will assure just that. The game was originally slated for a fall 2018 release but that date, as said in the report, was “unrealistic”.

As of yet there is no official word on Anthem’s delay from EA.

Rejoice fans of all things spooky and violent, Netflix’s Castlevania series is confirmed to have eight more episodes this summer. The news comes courtesy of show writer Warren Ellis who confirmed it via a tweet.

Castlevania was Netflix’s anime-style adaptation of the titular video game series. In which various members of the Belmont lineage go on quests to slay the King of Darkness Dracula. The franchise is one of the beloved classics of gaming, dating all the way back to the NES and has taken inspiration from dozens of different sources over the years. Netflix’s Castlevania series adapted Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse in particular and told the story of Trevor Belmont, a washed up member of the Belmont family, as he gathers up allies to take down Dracula now that he has risen again.

The series first launched in July of 2017 and was a well-received hit with fans and critics alike. It was praised for its faithfulness to the Castlevania series and impressive action scenes, with most criticisms being that the series felt far too short. A second season was confirmed almost immediately after, but this is the first we’re getting a time frame for when to expect it. While there isn’t a solid date yet, the summer season would put it roughly one year after when the first season aired.

The post Kefka Teased for Final Fantasy XIV’s Next Update appeared first on Twinfinite.

Towards the end of the month, Final Fantasy XIV Stormblood will be rolling out a massive new update. The update, titled Rise of a New Sun will be introducing a number of new bosses, raid dungeons, quests, and perhaps most notably of all Kefka Palazzo.

In a trailer for the update, players can get a glimpse of what’s to come. However, Final Fantasy veterans may see a few familiar faces, especially if they ever played Final Fantasy VI. A few classic enemies and bosses from the game including the ever iconic Phantom Train make some gracious appearances. Sadly, it’s unlikely we’ll get to suplex the train this time around; but it’s showcased quite nicely in the trailer alongside several other bosses, characters, and plot points. All to the delightfully nostalgic sounds of Dancing Mad, also from Final Fantasy VI. The most interesting part though, comes at the very end. When the trailer fades to black and the music fades we get a glimpse of Kefka’s face, followed by his signature laugh.

Kefka Palazzo was the main antagonist of Final Fantasy VI and is considered by many to be one of if not the greatest villain in Final Fantasy history. Little is known of his inclusion thus far, but with how prominently Final Fantasy VI is featured in the trailer it’s likely he will play a major part in the coming update.

Among other things, Final Fantasy XIV’s Rise of a New Sun update will be adding new mounts, buildable submersibles, a Hard Version of The Fractal Continuum and a new dungeon called Hell’s Lid, along with some changes to PvP.

The Rise of a New Sun will be officially released on January 30 for PS4 and PC. For more detailed information, check the official game website.

After a long week of impressive feats of gaming, 2017’s Awesome Games Done Quick has finally wrapped up. The week of gamers speedrunning games for charity ended with AGDQ having raised a total of $2,263,508 for the Prevent Cancer Foundation.

The numbers are still being tallied, but thus far the event outdid last year’s AGDQ by roughly $40,000. Over 32,000 people donated money with 130 of them going so far as to donate over $1000. Across the week Awesome Games Done Quick completed 150 speedruns with the final one being a five hour speedrun of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. A run that focused only on the main quests the game offers.

The first AGDQ happened back in 2011 and accrued a little over $52,000 dollars. Since then, AGDQ has only grown and has since become one of the biggest gaming charity fundraisers of the year. Thousands tune in each year to watch gamers pull of impressive speedruns and donate money for various good causes. The next event, Summer Games Done Quick, is scheduled to begin June 24 and run through to July 1.

Another day, another Splatfest comes to a close. Splatoon 2’s latest Splatfest asked players what their preferred genre was: Action or Comedy. It was a hard fought battle, but at the end of the day Team Comedy managed to secure the win 2-1. The results were announced on Nintendo of America’s Twitter.

In terms of raw votes, Team Action actually got the most players. But when it came time for the actual matches Team Comedy managed to snag a win by a slim margin, winning at 51% both times. Thus ends yet another if Splatoon’s acclaimed Splatfests.

Splatfests are mass competitions in the game where players are posed a simple question and can choose to represent one of two different teams for their answer. Each decision will also be represented by one of the two hosts of the Splatfest, Pearl and Marina. The teams then battle it out over the coming days with the match results determining which answer is “right”. Just so happens this time around Comedy one, albeit barely.

Splatoon 2 is for Nintendo Switch.

It looks like esports just got another big win under its belt. Major League Soccer has officially announced as of Jan. 12 that it will be partnering with EA Sports to create its own esports league. The league, named eMLS, will be tied to the upcoming EA Sports FIFA 18 Global Series Playoffs.

eMLS will feature 19 of the 23 MLS clubs and will have each real-world team pick a professional gamer to represent them in the competition. These players will then all face off in the eMLS Cup at PAX East. Whoever wins among those 19 will be guaranteed a spot in the FIFA 18 Global Series playoffs and can compete for a chance to move on to the FIFA eWorld Cup.

This comes right after the Overwatch League and its major success this week, representing yet another big step for esports and competitive gaming as a whole. Though that being said there is still much about the eMLS that remains unclear. Such as what kind if, if any, salaries or benefits these players might have. Also little to no word on how prevalent eMLS will be going forward beyond the Global Series.

In a statement, BLS Business Ventures president Gary Stevenson said:

“This step forward into competitive gaming is a key component in our partnership with EA Sports to promote deeper engagement and connections between MLS supporters and the millions of FIFA players around the world,”

EA’s Star Wars: Battlefront II was the source of one of gaming’s biggest controversies in 2017. Though now sales numbers are starting to come in for the game courtesy of VGChartz that show just how poorly the game sold as a result of the backlash.

According to the sales figures, Star Wars: Battlefront II sold roughly around a total of 1,326, 906 units at its first week in retail. The breakdown of that number have it doing its best on the Playstation 4 with about two-thirds of the sales coming from there at 869,493 units. The Xbox One version of the game sold about 438,708 units by comparison, with Windows PC selling around 18,705 units.

Bear in mind these numbers do not take digital sales into account, but even giving the game generous estimates on that front its sales are significantly below what 2015’s Star Wars: Battlefront did in its opening week. In its first week Battlefront sold a total of 3,675,687 units. By comparison, Battlefront II has had an almost two-thirds dropoff.

This is most likely a direct result to the incredible fan backlash the game received for its loot boxes and pay-to-win mechanics. Further sales figures have yet to surface for the title, but it appears the game sold far less than was intended.

The Sony PS4 managed to sell a grand total of 5.9 million units worldwide during the 2017 holiday season, spanning roughly from Nov. 20 to Dec. 31. The announcement was made on their website along with a number of other sales figures.

“Thanks to the continued support from our fans across the globe, we are honored to announce remarkable sales during the holiday season,” said John Kodera, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment. “PlayStation Network continues to demonstrate spectacular growth, with the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers surpassing 31.5 million*5, and PS Store recording its largest-ever monthly sales of content in December 2017. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our community and our partners for helping us achieve such phenomenal milestones. We promise our unwavering commitment to bring more amazing experiences to our fans, including exclusive games and innovative network services, as PS4 continues to flourish as the best place to play.”

The announcement also included other numbers, telling that the PS4 has now sold a cumulative total of 73.6 million units globally. In addition, more than 55.9 million PS4 games were sold during the same holiday window.

This so far maintains the PS4’s sales trend of rivaling the PS2’s sales during the same period in its life cycle. To date, the PS2 remains the best selling console of all time, selling a total of 155 million units across its lifespan. While the PS4 is only just now encroaching upon half of that, it’s predicted to continue selling well.

After last month’s trailer showing off Super Saiyan Blue Goku for Dragonball FighterZ, it should come as no surprise that the latest character trailer now has his rival Vegeta doing the same.

Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan, otherwise known as Super Saiyan Blue, is the latest transformation the character has achieved as the time of writing and has him ascending to power that rivals the very gods themselves. As with other trailers, it’s short and intense, demonstrating fast-paced combos, kinetic action, and Vegeta’s signature Final Flash in all of its cel-shaded glory.

For now SSGSS Vegeta and SSGSS Goku are only available if you pre-order the game. As of right now there is no official word on if or when they will be made available after release.

Dragonball FighterZ is a game based off of the popular Dragonball franchise and is set to feature an original story with an original character made by the original series creator. The game will release on Jan. 26th for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
