One of the biggest topics in gaming throughout 2017 that will likely carry over into this year and beyond was the alleged decline of the single-player game. It’s interesting, then, that Horizon Zero Dawn, one of last year’s most successful single-player adventures, at one time had a co-op mode built into it.

“At the beginning, we were thinking about two players in co-op, our very early prototype was with two players,” Game Director Mathijs de Jonge recently told NoClip. “We had the game running back then in co-op and that was quite nice to see.”

So, why did developer Guerilla Games drop co-op? Was it out of a sense of dedication to pure single-player experiences a la Machine Games? Not exactly. Guerilla didn’t want to sacrifice other features in order to make co-op run-up to the standard it had set for the game.

“We haven’t got that [in the final game] because the programmers basically said that if we wanted to have co-op, we would also have 50 percent of the features we had been asking for and not 100 percent,” explained de Jonge. “With Horizon Zero Dawn being the first game [in the franchise], we wanted 100 percent, so we dropped co-op in favor of that.

“The NPCs fighting along, that is very complicated to get that right and we didn’t want to go there for this game because it’s so much work to do that well.”

Aside from comments about wanting to feature more machine enemies and an engaging narrative, neither Guerilla nor publisher Sony have announced concrete details about a Horizon sequel. So while de Jonge seems to be leaving the door open for co-op’s inclusion in the inevitable follow-up, it’s anything but a confirmed feature at this point.

In a reversal from the sales fates of their original versions, the Super NES Classic Edition has far outpaced sales of forebear NES Classic Edition. Nintendo announced in its latest financial report yesterday that it had sold four million units of its Super NES Classic Edition.

This far outpaces the NES Classic Edition, which sold a reported 2.3 million units during its limited run. Speaking of which, Nintendo also reaffirmed yesterday its previously announced plans to bring that mini-console back for another run sometime later this year.

No doubt helping the SNES Classic Edition along in overtaking it is the fact that Nintendo manufactured far more Super NES Classic Editions during that platform’s own limited run than it did for the initial NES Classic Edition run. This decision came after the NES Classic Edition was notoriously difficult for consumers to find in stock online or at physical stores. But while Super NES Classic Edition supplies have been more plentiful than those of its predecessor, the console has still been notoriously difficult for many consumers to purchase.

The four million units sold mark includes sales of the North American and European SNES Classic Edition launched in September 2017 as well as the Japanese Super Famicom Mini variant launched in October 2017.

First launched in Japan in 1983, the original NES sold nearly 62 million units. The SNES followed in 1990, going on to sell more than 49 million units.

The post Nintendo Has Already Sold More Than Half as Many Switch Games as Wii U Games appeared first on Twinfinite.

]]>
The runaway success that is the Nintendo Switch sold more units in nine months than the Wii U was able to in more than four years, and Switch owners don’t seem content to allow their shiny new consoles to sit unplayed collecting dust. Led by Super Mario Odyssey, Nintendo Switch software sales have already surpassed more than half of the Wii U’s lifetime game sales.

In a financial report released today, Nintendo revealed that it had sold more than 52 million Switch games as of December 31, 2017. Between the Wii U’s November 2012 launch and January 2017 discontinuation, Nintendo sold over 101 million pieces of software for the console.

The Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017 and reached this milestone so quickly by doing something Nintendo was never able to do with the Wii U: consistently releasing new, high-quality first-party games. While the Wii U was home to a number of excellent Nintendo games, their releases were few and far between, with little third-party support of note available to fill in the gaps. And while the Switch is still lagging behind contemporaries Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in third-party support, the console is certainly outperforming Wii U in this field with games like Doom, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and Rocket League leading the way.

If the current sales pace continues, Switch game sales would surpass Wii U game sales sometime around November. Considering that as the install base continues to grow every month the rate at which new games are purchased should also quicken, it may happen even sooner than that. On the other hand, Nintendo may have a difficult time equaling its impressive 2017 game release calendar in 2018. While Kirby and Yoshi are getting new games this year, those titles are unlikely to garner the kind of sales that Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild have.

Still, the future looks bright for Switch, which seems poised to continue surpassing sales milestones reached by less-popular Nintendo forebears like Wii U, GameCube, and Nintendo 64. In fact, the console may even be able to eclipse the Wii’s sales successes when all is said and done.

The second installment of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus’ Freedom Chronicles DLC three-pack has arrived alongside a launch trailer. The Diaries of Agent Silent Death puts players in control of the titular Agent Silent Death (AKA Jessica Valiant), a former OSS agent who has to “stalk, shoot, and stab” Nazis “from the shadows.”

The launch trailer publisher Bethesda posted today shows Silent Death doing just that, which will come as no surprise to anyone who played the Freedom Chronicles 2017 demo that featured more of the same. Interspersed with the stealth Nazi killings are some shots from the comic book-style vignettes that stand in for the main game’s cut-scenes in the DLC.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus launched in October 2017 to critical acclaim. Its first Freedom Chronicles release, the more action-packed Adventures of Gunslinger Joe, launched in December 2017. The Amazing Deeds of Captain Wilkins is set to wrap up the Freedom Chronicles in March.

Vehicles will no longer be quite as dangerous in Playerunknown Battlegrounds on Xbox One. In a post on the official PUBG forums this morning, Community Manager Andro Dars wrote that developer Bluehole is nerfing vehicles in an update this week due to player feedback.

Players on foot will now do increased damage when shooting or throwing grenades at vehicles and will also dole out “significant damage” when shooting vehicles’ wheels. Drivers and passengers will also take more damage when they crash a vehicle and the damage players on foot absord when run over will be lessened.

Additionally, the patch optimizes input lag, improves the aiming reticle’s “visual quality,” and fixes several bugs. The full patch notes can be read in the original forum post.

PUBG hit the Xbox One Game Preview in December 2017 and reached three million players one month later.

Elon Musk’s The Boring Company began selling flamethrowers, of all things, last week, and he’s already sold north of 7,000 units. And while Musk has joked that his flamethrower will be useful for surviving a zombie apocalypse, it appears more likely it’ll be useful for fighting off alien monsters, bandits, and corporate soldiers.

After sarcastically tweeting that “the flamethrower is sentient, its safe word is ‘cryptocurrency,’ and it comes with a free blockchain,” Musk was contacted by Gearbox Software President and CEO Randy Pitchford about possibly including the gun in Gearbox’s upcoming Borderlands 3.

“I’m going to add this to our next Borderlands game. Super serious,” tweeted Pitchford yesterday. “Let me know if you want to write the flavor text. You may have already done so — we’ll just lift it from one of your tweets.”

Musk tweeted back that he was fine with this and Pitchford responded that it was a done deal.

Although the last few years have been filled with a Borderland spin-offs, a prequel, and a re-release, fans have been waiting for a true Borderlands sequel since 2012’s Borderlands 2. Pitchford hinted in September 2017 that at least 90 percent of Gearbox was working on Borderlands 3, but the game does not yet have a release date or even an official announcement beyond Pitchford previously saying there would “obviously” be another Borderlands game.

Assassin’s Creed Origins is a huge game, and even if you’ve somehow managed to do everything there is to do in the open-world adventure and still want another challenge, Ubisoft has something in the works for you. The developer is bringing a new game plus mode to Origins.

“New Game + is coming. We’ll have more information to share soon,” wrote Ubisoft Community Manager Dominik Voigt on Reddit yesterday.

It’s a feature fans have been clamoring for online for some time but one Ubisoft has never before included in any of the franchise’s many games. Ubisoft previously said it was looking into whether or not it could create such a mode for Origins.

“We know that a large number of community members have requested a New Game+ feature,” reads a post to the game’s official website from December 2017. We are currently investigating the possibility of implementing this option in a future title update.”

When that title update will arrive is unknown at this time, but Assassin’s Creed fans already have last week’s The Hidden Ones DLC to play for now with The Curse of the Pharaohs set to follow on March 6.

Asked today on Twitter if he was interested in bringing the game to Nintendo Switch, Epic Worldwide Creative Director Donald Mustard responded, “Yes. Yes I am. Hopefully we do that at some point!”

Fortnite hit early access in July 2017 and is scheduled to release at an unannounced date later this year. Earlier this month, the game surpassed 40 million players and launched a new map for its popular Battle Royale mode.

When Sea of Thieves’ open beta went live yesterday, many beta invitees ran into errors telling them they were too early for the beta and preventing them from playing it. Developer Rare was “still investigating” the problem most of the day, but announced today that it deployed a temporary solution last night.

“We are aware that players may still be receiving the ‘too early’ error message when launching the Sea of Thieves Closed Beta,” reads an update posted to the game’s website. “We rolled out a temporary fix to address the issue for most impacted players last night; however, we are also working on a longer-term solution for the remainder of the Closed Beta to accommodate all customers [who] have pre-ordered digitally.”

The error and temporary fix only apply to those who pre-ordered Sea of Thieves digitally through the Xbox or Windows stores. Rare has advised those who received an invite elsewhere to contact support.

A permanent fix for the problem, meanwhile, will be available by 3 a.m. EST tomorrow.

David Jaffe’s The Bartlet Jones Supernatural Detective Agency has had to lay off most of its staff after the cancelation of one of its games.

“Wanted y’all 2 hear [sic] it from me before anyone else: we’ve had a project canceled and have been forced 2 lay [sic] off the vast majority of the Bartlet Jones staff gaming division,” tweeted Jaffe yesterday. “More news 2 come [sic] but for now, that’s what’s up. Heart’s

Jaffe directed 2005’s God of War and its 2007 sequel while working for Sony Santa Monica. He then formed his own studio, Eat Sleep Play, which saw Jaffe return to Twisted Metal, another major franchise he created while at Sony. After leaving Eat Sleep Play in 2012 over “creative differences,” Jaffe started The Bartlet Jones Supernatural Detective Agency in 2014. Bartlet Jones released Drawn to Death in April 2017, but the game was panned by critics.

Sea of Thieves, one of Microsoft’s most-anticipated exclusive games of 2018, launched its closed beta at 7 a.m. EST this morning, only to have large numbers of users unable to play the game. Developer Rare has taken to Twitter to respond to the issues, which seem to be plaguing most but not all users.

“We’re still investigating ongoing issues with launching the Closed Beta,” reads a tweet from the official Sea of Thieves account. Rare is recommending closed beta invitees experiencing problems reference the installation support guide and the closed beta FAQ in the interim.

“We’re aware of these issues and are working quickly to address and deal with them!” the Sea of Thieves wrote in a separate tweet responding to one fan’s frustrations.

Both the official Sea of Thieves forum and the game’s subreddit are filled with complaints from beta invitees who are unable to get the game to play.

The beta is scheduled to run until January 29 at 3 a.m. EST, but some fans are now wondering if Rare and publisher Microsoft will extend the beta to make up for today’s problems.

Sea of Thieves is scheduled to launch on Xbox One and PC on March 20. It will also be playable via Xbox Games Pass on launch day.

Microsoft is expanding its Netflix for games-style Xbox Game Pass service to include all new Microsoft-published games on their respective launch days. Xbox executive Phil Spencer this morning announced the expansion of the service he says already includes over 100 games.

Spencer highlighted Sea of Thieves, which launches on March 20, as the first big game to be part of the Xbox Game Pass expansion.

“This plan to bring new games timed with their global release into Xbox Game Pass not only includes announced titles like Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2, and Crackdown 3 but future unannounced games from Microsoft Studios including new iterations of our biggest Xbox One exclusive franchises such as Halo, Forza, and Gears of War, on the same day they launch,” he explained.

An Xbox Game Pass subscription costs $10 a month, but Spencer also revealed that the service’s expansion will include a new way to subscribe. Select retailers (including GameStop) will begin selling six-month subscription cards for $59.99 on March 20.

Microsoft launched Xbox Game Pass in June 2017 and expanded it to 40 countries in September 2017. In addition to Microsoft-published games, the service also brings subscribers games published by 2K Games, Capcom, Sega, Namco WB Games, and other third parties.

While other games industry titans are betting big on high-tech plastic and metal products like virtual reality headsets, Nintendo is betting big on high-tech…cardboard. Before it’s assembled, Nintendo Labo looks more like part of the box tech products come in that you throw away after opening rather than the actual tech products inside said box, and so someone very nearly did just that.

As was first reported by Glixel, the cleaning staff at Germany’s software ratings board USK was on its way to the trash with the Labo kits Nintendo had sent USK when someone caught them.

“FINALLY (emphasis theirs), we can tell the anecdote, as the latest Nintendo hardware was almost once disposed of by the cleaning staff as waste paper,” USK tweeted, according to Google Translate.

USK’s near miss serves as a cautionary tale for parents, spouses, etc. everywhere once gamers start buying Labo kits en masse after the first of the cardboard game sets launch April 20. Remember, one man’s trash is another man’s…Nintendo Switch game.

“This was on us. No excuses.”

That’s Bungie, issuing an apology for an ill-received decision it made about Destiny 2 not for the first time. This time around, the developer has its fans steaming over a confusing cooldown system in the newly returned Faction Rally event that prevents players from unlocking rewards when they play the game too much. Naturally, this hasn’t sat well with the game’s most frequent players.

In its blog post yesterday, Bungie explained why it rolled out the system while admitting it hasn’t worked out well. The developer also said it’s working on a new solution.

“There was an issue in the previous Faction Rallies where players were earning hundreds of Faction Tokens per hour without firing a single shot. In the recent December 12 update, Faction Token rewards were added to an existing system that was locking players out from Lost Sector Rewards. We have heard player feedback that this solution was too disruptive. We’re looking at a change that won’t make players feel forced to run to and from a single chest for hours while also not placing a hard stop on enjoying Lost Sectors. We want to ensure that every time you open a chest there is loot inside. We’ll share more details on this before the next Faction Rallies.”

But the cooldown wasn’t the only source of fans’ ire. Bungie wrote that many players asked “Where are the new Season 2 weapons?” The developer admitted it failed to make clear that they would be deployed throughout the season’s events instead of all at once at the start and offered full details on the roll-out in a forum post.

Bungie closed things out by promising to correct its difficulties communicating with players. Of course, this comes exactly one week after its last promise to be more transparent.

Yesterday, Nintendo announced Nintendo Labo, a series Switch games relying on cardboard peripherals to enhance the experience. The company announced three different first-party Labo products for the April 20 launch, but what about third-party support?

That’s the question Time asked Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime, who would only vaguely commit to future possibilities. “While there’s nothing to announce today, certainly if we’re successful with Labo, it can create future opportunities,” he said.

Still, Fils-Aime made clear that Labo won’t necessarily be limited to the April launch’s Variety Kit, Robot Kit, and Customization Kit launching. Even on this front, however, Fils-Aime would not even confirm whether or not the console holder itself planned to release more Labo products.

“Can [the Toy-Cons] be incorporated into other forms of gameplay? Certainly,” he said. “But right now we think if we effectively communicate the power of the idea with Nintendo Labo [and] really enable players to make their creations, personalize them, and enjoy the [inherent] gameplay experiences… We think that’s going to be a great way to start and then progress down the path.”

Fortnite’s previously announced Map Update (patch v.2.2.0) will release tomorrow, January 18, according to the game’s official Twitter account.

As was announced earlier this month, the update expands the map for the game’s popular Battle Royale map to include new city, undergrounds mines, and other environments in the western side of the map. The patch also brings with it some new weapons and a host of gameplay, performance, UI, audio, animation, and other fixes you can read about in detail here.

With the update, the map will now feature new points of interest and biomes that developer People Can Fly says will enrich the environment and make each area feel more personalized.

Microsoft Is Making a New Open-World Fable Game — Report http://twinfinite.net/2018/01/microsoft-is-making-a-new-open-world-fable-game-report/ http://twinfinite.net/2018/01/microsoft-is-making-a-new-open-world-fable-game-report/#respond Wed, 17 Jan 2018 14:55:36 +0000 http://twinfinite.net/?p=325355 You won't believe what studio is supposedly making it.

Eight calendar years have passed since Microsoft released the last numbered Fable game (Fable III) in 2010, and the studio that created the Fable franchise (Lionhead) was disbanded in 2016 when Microsoft canceled its final project (Fable Legends). According to a new report, however, Microsoft has greenlit development on a new “big-budget” Fable game.

Eurogamer reports that Forza Horizon studio Playground is developing a “character-focused, open-world, action-RPG” that sounds like it will serve as Fable IV. Though Microsoft has declined to comment on the game’s alleged existence, anonymous “sources close to the project” informed Eurogamer of its existence.

Around 200 developers are said to be readying to work on the game at a new Playground office in the English town of Leamington Spa, where the studio’s original office is also located. Currently, the team is believed to consist of fewer than 100 people, so while the team is being built up towards that 200 number, it could be a long time until anyone outside Microsoft gets their hands on this next Fable game.

The former Lionhead team that was working on the multiplayer-centric Fable Legends is said to have been interested in making a single-player Fable IV itself after the former game’s completion, but they never got the chance. Microsoft is believed to be rekindling Fable IV now with Playground after witnessing rival Sony’s success with 2017’s single-player, open-world Horizon: New Dawn.

Horizon earned a Metacritic weighted average score of 89, has reportedly moved north of four million copies to date, and at least one analysis has it eventually selling through eight million copies.

The original Fable launched for Xbox in 2004. Its most recent entry was Fable Fortune, a freemium card game that launched in early access last year before eventually being canceled.

Yesterday brought some big Dark Souls news: the original game was being remastered for the Nintendo Switch, and the entire trilogy was getting a box set on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. And while it wasn’t immediately clear if the box set would be released outside Japan, publisher Bandai Namco has weighed in on that front, and the news isn’t good for Dark Souls fans.

Speaking with Game Informer, a Bandai Namco representative confirmed that the company has no plans to release the box set “in the Americas.” The only option for American gamers who want to get their hands on the Dark Souls Trilogy, then, will be to import it.

The Dark Souls Trilogy box set will release in Japan on May 25 for 49,800 yen.

Microsoft’s Xbox One has consistently trailed Sony’s rival PlayStation 4 in sales for the vast majority of the current console generation, which kicked off in November 2013 when both consoles launched. Every once in a great while, though, the Xbox One outsells the PlayStation 4 for a month, and December 2017 was reportedly such a month.

“Thank you to everyone who helped support [Xbox One] this holiday, [NPD Group] just reported our highest Xbox One December console share ever,” General Manager, Xbox Games Marketing Aaron Greenberg tweeted yesterday.

This being the internet, someone immediately questioned the tone of Greenberg’s tweet, interpreting it to mean PlayStation 4 or Nintendo Switch was the month’s top-selling console. And as it turns out, the fan wasn’t entirely wrong. That did not, however, mean Xbox One finished behind both consoles, as it so often has since the Switch launched in March 2017.

“Xbox outsold PS4 in December for Gen 8 consoles according to NPD data,” Greenberg responded, “while Nintendo also had a great month as Switch had most overall units.”

Seeing how far behind Sony it was falling in lifetime-to-date sales, Microsoft stopped publicly reporting Xbox One sales numbers in October 2015, so it’s unlikely the public will ever know just how many units Microsoft moved last month. In any case, the console is some tens of millions of units behind the PlayStation 4’s 73.6 million units sold as of December 31, 2017.

Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch has much ground to make up on both consoles since it launched more than three years later. Still, Switch became the fastest-selling console in U.S. history earlier this month and has already outsold predecessor Wii U’s lifetime sales in Japan.
