The Yakuza series is quite tricky to localize. Not only does it have a large tonal difference between its gritty main storyline and comedic side missions, but it also proudly delves on the culture of Japan, which is vastly different from the West. Translating Japanese honorifics is also tricky to pull off, and the localization team of Yakuza 6: The Song of Life has decided to refrain from translating one familial term provide a more authentic experience.

Speaking to Gamasutra, Atlus’ localization producer Scott Strichart acknowledged complaints for directly translating the Japanese honorific “aniki” to “sir” in Yakuza 0. Aniki literally translates to big brother, but this is actually used as a term of respect in the Yakuza. “But because that’s a word so many people know, when we translated aniki as ‘sir,’ to indicate a deference, a respect, people were like ‘that’s not what that means,’” said Strichart. “I saw a lot of criticism for that.”

To address this concern from purists, the localization team decided to use the word “aniki” in Yakuza 6: The Song of Life. “It’s Kiryun-aniki, now; Kiryun-aniki is a thing in this game,” said Strichart. To help players understand what “aniki” means, the team placed an explanation for the Japanese honorific in the tips that appear during loading screens.

“It’s weird watching how Japanese language has become a little more common and ingrained in English lexicon over the years,” said Strichart. “So that some words which, ten years ago people would have said ‘what is that?’ are now commonplace. Senpai, for example. Everyone knows senpai now. So we’re pleased to be able to use that word, just straight up.”

In the interview, Strichart also discussed other notable information on the series, such as its thorough but slow localization process, closing the gap for Western releases, and perceiving Yakuza as a “virtual tourism” game.

Yakuza 6: The Song of Life launches on April 17 exclusively on PS4. Players will get to try out the localized game via a demo on Feb. 27 and your progress can be carried over into the full game.

The April-bound God of War for PS4 is more non-linear than previous games in the series, with Sony Santa Monica creating massive areas that can be discovered by players who explore off the beaten path. Just recently, the game’s director has confirmed that protagonists Kratos and Atreus may also encounter optional bosses in the game.

Speaking to GameInformer, game director Cory Barlog gave a firm “yes” when asked whether God of War will have optional bosses. Barlog didn’t delve on the specifics for encountering bosses, but it’s safe to assume that players will have to explore every nook and cranny of the game’s world to find and kill all of them. This is a great addition to the series, considering previous games solely rewarded exploration with a few collectible items that would increase Kratos’ health and magic meter.

In addition to encountering optional bosses, Barlog confirmed that God of War will still have collectibles that will help strengthen Kratos. However, collectibles are no longer traditionally stored inside chests.

God of War for PS4 is scheduled to arrive on April 20, 2018 exclusively on PS4.  A $129.99-priced collector’s edition is also scheduled on the same date, carrying a few cool items including a nine-inch Kratos and Atreus statue, cloth map, limited steelbook case, and a Stone Mason’s ring.

Metal Gear Survive joins the list of online-only games with daily and weekly events to incentivize players to log in frequently so they can earn great rewards.

As announced by Konami (via Metal Gear Informer), Metal Gear Survive will have daily, weekly, and special event Orders. Aside from getting useful materials and blueprints for use in single-player and multiplayer co-op for completing these tasks, not much specific details were shed regarding what orders you’ll be given. This isn’t the first time the series has introduced limited-time events, as Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain had event FOBs.

Rewards in the weekly events will likely be important to your survival in Metal Gear Survive due to the game’s emphasis in resource gathering and base building. Weirdly enough, Metal Gear Survive seems to have most elements found in free-to-play games: online-only requirement, daily events, timers for resources, and resource grinding. Thankfully, microtransactions and loot boxes have yet to be announced by Konami.

Metal Gear Survive launches on February 20 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Those interested in trying out the survival game can participate in the open beta test for PS4 and Xbox One starting from Jan. 18 to 21.

Trolling and griefing has been a long-time serious issue in Fortnite Battle Royale, especially when playing with strangers. Getting shot in the back by teammates has been annoying many for quite a while now, and Epic Games has now disabled friendly fire to quickly eliminate this issue.

As announced on the game’s official forum, friendly fire was disabled “in an attempt to reduce team killing in Fortnite Battle Royale.” This change is now live on the game’s servers and doesn’t require a client update.

The representative from Epic Games stated that they are also aware of the strategic elements that friendly fire brings to Fortnite. Because of this, they will try to look at other alternatives in reducing team killing if this dumbs down the game’s strategic aspects.

“We understand that when players abuse friendly fire it can be an incredibly frustrating experience,” said Epic Games’ Eric Williamson. “The impact of this change will be closely monitored, and in the case that those tactics are too negatively affected we may evaluate other methods of reducing team killing.”

Dragon Ball FighterZ Open Beta Is Now Live for Everyone, but with Server Issues http://twinfinite.net/2018/01/dragon-ball-fighterz-open-beta/ http://twinfinite.net/2018/01/dragon-ball-fighterz-open-beta/#respond Sun, 14 Jan 2018 14:46:17 +0000 http://twinfinite.net/?p=324630 Over 9000 error prompts.

]]>
Update: The official Facebook account of Dragon Ball FighterZ has recently announced that it is looking into extending the open beta if the team takes long to fix the server issues.

“Thank you for your invaluable feedback so far and for your time playing with the Open Beta of Dragon Ball FighterZ,” stated Dragon Ball FighterZ’s official Facebook handle.”Our team is working hard on the Open Beta but faced some issues that can’t be fixed on a short-term basis, so we are asking for your patience until the next server update. The current Open Beta will remain online and available so that the players who manage to log in and play it can keep on enjoying it. Be advised that if despite all reasonable efforts, we could not find a satisfactory outcome within a decent time, we will consider extending the Open Beta of Dragon Ball FighterZ.”

Original Story: The Dragon Ball FighterZ open beta is now live on PS4 and Xbox One, allowing you to familiarize yourself with the 2.5D fighter before its official release on Jan. 26, 2018. With beta tests being done primarily to test the game’s servers, expect plenty of issues to crop up once in a while.

The servers for Dragon Ball FighterZ have been unreliable since the open beta started, with plenty of players complaining on social media and gaming forums about server issues. Apparently, plenty of gamers are stuck in the game’s main menu as they keep on receiving an error prompt saying “failed to initialize network.”

For those who get past the menu screen, matchmaking with other players is the next big dilemma, with some stating that it took them over an hour to get in a match. If you’re having this problem, you can try a few trial battle matches while waiting for the servers to get fixed.

Apparently, some minor issues even cropped in during the open beta early access as Bandai Namco performed a server maintenance early on and tried to ease up fans concerning the issues. “Thanks for being patient during the issues we’ve been having with the Dragon Ball FighterZ Open Beta,” said Bandai Namco on Twitter. “The dev. team has been working around the clock to address the problems. We’ll continue to keep you updated on the status of Open Beta as issues are addressed.”

Thankfully, there’s still a few more days before the Dragon Ball FighterZ open beta ends. The open beta, which has a whopping roster count of 11 playable fighters across seven stages, will run from Jan. 14 to Jan. 16.

Developed by Arc System Works, Dragon Ball FighterZ launches on Jan. 26 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT Developers Express Interest in Adding Zack and Delita http://twinfinite.net/2018/01/dissidia-final-fantasy-nt-zack/ http://twinfinite.net/2018/01/dissidia-final-fantasy-nt-zack/#respond Fri, 12 Jan 2018 05:40:26 +0000 http://twinfinite.net/?p=324268 Choose your dream team.

The post Dissidia Final Fantasy NT Developers Express Interest in Adding Zack and Delita appeared first on Twinfinite.

]]>
The team behind Dissidia Final Fantasy NT has name-dropped a few characters they would love to see added in the upcoming fighting game.

Speaking to EDAMAME Arcade Channel, producer Ichiro Hamaza said he would love to add Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII protagonist Zack Fair so he can see him interact with Cloud Strife. Zack and Cloud are known for using the iconic Buster Sword, and Hamaza believes it would be interesting for both characters to wield it differently in Dissidia Final Fantasy NT. “Zack would probably use the same weapons as Cloud but the way he would use them would be different,” said Hazama.

This isn’t the first time the developers expressed interest in adding Zack, with the game’s director previously acknowledging the character’s resounding popularity.

Similarly, director Takeo Kujiraoka expressed interest in including Delita Heiral from Final Fantasy Tactics so he can see him together with Ramza Beoulve. “I really like that pairing,” Kujiraoka said. “I’d love to add Delita to Dissidia NT someday. I’d like to see how they interact on the same team.”

While this doesn’t outright confirm the inclusion of both Zack and Delita, it’s interesting to hear that they have a chance of landing in the roster. A total of 28 characters will be available once the PS4-exclusive game launches in January 30, with the game’s season pass adding six more fighters.

The developers also explained their plans in expanding the character lineup. “There is a big roster, but we have plans to at some point add the characters that were in the original PSP version,” said Hamaza. “The decisions on who to bring in are made by Kujiraoka and Tetsuya Nomura.”

Kujiraoka also revealed their process of choosing which characters to add in Dissidia Final Fantasy NT: “We take into consideration popularity, and whether the characters’ move set would fit into Dissidia NT. We try to choose characters who will have a unique fighting style.”

Insomniac Games conducted a two-day long playtest for its upcoming Spider-Man PS4 game and the team’s newly hired design director hinted that the game isn’t a slouch in terms of length.

On Twitter, Brian Horton said it took him “multiple days” to finish each playthrough of Marvel’s Spider-Man. A lengthy play time definitely expected, considering this is an open-world game, which will likely include plenty of side quests. Horton’s statement also indicates that the game is playable from start to end, but is likely far from being feature-complete.

As revealed earlier this week, Insomniac Games had a studio-wide playtesting for its Spider-Man PS4 game. QA Tester Chris Sosnowski said he and his co-workers “get paid to play video games all day” during the playtesting period

While not specified by anyone from Insomniac Games, Horton might have gotten to play for “multiple days” more instead of two. Presumably, this was done to help him get him up to speed with Marvel’s Spider-Man, considering he just joined the team in Jan. 2, 2018.

Marvel’s Spider-Man is slated to launch sometime in 2018 exclusively on PS4.

Apparently, someone managed to snag an early copy of Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition and showcased some of the game’s new content.

As shown in a video by reddit user junkington, Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition allows users to display the frame advantage setting in Training Mode. For those unaware, frame advantage shows a comparison of the recovery time between two players after a blocked attack, which is extremely helpful for testing block-strings to determine which attacks can be punished. Junkington also took to Reddit to reveal a few new features, including a battle replay and rematch option during VS mode.

Based on the Reddit discussion, junkington secured a brand new physical copy of the game with no special artwork of Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, but the disc already came preloaded with Arcade Edition’s content. Presumably, abstaining from going online and downloading the initial patch will allow some players who secure a brand new copy to play the unreleased build ahead of Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition’s Jan. 16, 2017 release date. This edition comes with all the first two seasons of characters and includes a slew of additional features, including new V-Triggers.

Capcom has recently expressed interest in reviving its dormant survival-horror dinosaur shooter game. Capcom’s Division 1, the team behind games such as Resident Evil and Devil May Cry, said on Twitter that Dino Crisis could make a return “if a lot of people wish.” Capcom said this in response to a query from ResetEra user Jawmuncher who asked regarding the chances of a Dino Crisis comeback.

Capcom’s short reply does not guarantee a revival. Nonetheless, it brings a small ray of hope to fans that they could again see Regina and other characters fight against hordes of raptors and escape from undefeatable T. rexes.

Earlier this year, Resident Evil 7 producer Masachika Kawata told Daily Star there are no conversations at Capcom about bringing back Dino Crisis, but he believes “it would be a really exciting prospect” to see the series running on modern gaming technology. With Capcom recently reviving dormant franchises and making bold moves, one can only hope this includes Dino Crisis. Notable strides by Capcom includes bringing Monster Hunter back to consoles with Monster Hunter World, reinvigorating zombie game Resident Evil 7 with a new cast of characters and a first-person perspective, and celebrating the Blue Bomber’s 30th anniversary with Mega Man 11.

Created by Shinji Mikami, the first Dino Crisis launched way back in 1999 and endeared dinosaur fans with its survival horror aspects and clunky tank controls similar to Resident Evil. The last major release was in 2003 with Dino Crisis 3. Since then, Capcom has been mum on reviving the IP, with Capcom saying in 2010 that there was no “burning desire” to revive the franchise.

Ren Amamiya will be the official name for the phantom thief code named Joker, Persona Central reports. Fans might be surprised by this reveal, considering the protagonist was called Akira Kurusu in the official manga adaptation. Persona Central’s Mystic tweets that the name Ren perfectly fits the theme of Persona 5, as it means “lotus” or the cleansing of one’s body from sin.

Having the protagonist’s name changed isn’t new for the series, with the protagonists for Persona 3 and Persona 4 also having their canon names changed for the animated film and the spin-off games. In retrospect, Persona 3’s protagonist name was changed from Minato Arisato to Makoto Yuki while Persona 4’s protagonist name was changed from Souji Seta to Yu Narukami. With this, expect to see Joker named as Ren Amamiya once Atlus makes a new spin-off entry featuring the character.

In addition to the protagonist’s name reveal, the stream revealed that all Japanese voice actors will reprise their role for the upcoming film coming next year in Japan.

The latest content update for Epic Games’ Fortnite: Battle Royale is now live on all platforms, adding a new grenade that makes players dance. You can hop in Fortnite and try the new weapon right now, as there is no update required.

The highlight of the update is a new weapon called the Boogie Bomb, a hand grenade that forces players to stop everything they’re doing to boogie dance. According to the game’s developers, the Boogie Bomb will be a permanent addition for Fortnite: Battle Royale. This weapon, which can be obtained from treasure chests and supply drops, can be stacked to a limit of 10.

The 50v50 limited-time mode also makes a welcome return for the holidays, but will rotate out on Dec. 28 to make way for a new limited-time event dubbed High Explosives. In the High Explosives event, players will be limited to explosive weapons, namely snowball launchers, rocket launchers, and the various grenades.

Fortnite: Battle Royale is currently playable for free on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Developer Insomniac Games continues to grow and has recently enlisted a top talent to help with its upcoming PS4-exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man.

Brian Horton officially announced on Twitter that he will start working on Spider-Man PS4 starting Jan. 1, 2018. Insomniac Games poked fun at his announcement, saying Horton will be the only person working in the office on that day, considering it’s a holiday.

Horton will be working as a design director for Spider-Man PS4, which sounds promising due to his experience. Horton mostly has art projects in his belt, working as an art director for Disney Interactive Studios and senior art director for Vivendi Universal Games. In addition, he has manned the role of lead artist for The Collective, DreamWorks Interactive, EA, and Disney Interactive. The most notable and most recent projects he has worked on includes helming the creative director role for Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare single-player campaign and game director for Crystal Dynamic’s Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Spider-Man PS4 is an ambitious open-world action game being developed by Insomniac Games, with the team touting to have a map size that’s several times bigger than Sunset Overdrive. The team also said players will get to experience the life of Peter Parker with and without the wall-crawler’s suit. The title also features notable protagonists in the Spidey universe such as Miles Morales and Mary Jane, with the latter said to be playable during a few missions.

Spider-Man PS4 is scheduled to launch sometime in 2018.

Dead or Alive 5 will no longer receive further additional content from Team Ninja, thus ending its streak of seven season passes composed of cosmetic outfits for its cast of male and female fighters.

In a video, Team Ninja brand manager Yosuke Hayashi assured everyone that “the Dead or Alive team is very active” despite wrapping up development on Dead or Alive 5. However, Team Ninja failed to specify its next project, so don’t hold your breath for a new main entry for Dead or Alive just yet. Nonetheless, game director Yohei Shimbori said that the team stopped development on Dead or Alive 5 to “look into the future.” Shimbori adds that fans might not hear from Team Ninja anytime soon as the team prepares for its next endeavor.

As Dead or Alive 5 will no longer receive additional content, fans can now take a break from spending their hard-earned money for cosmetic DLCs.  Team Ninja has released a slew of cosmetic DLCs for the fighting game’s male and female characters, and it would cost a little over half a thousand dollars to get everything. Shimbori is proud of this, saying “we have created so much downloadable content that the sheer amount would be worthy of the Guinness Book of World Records.”

Dead or Alive 5: Last Round is currently available for PS4 and Xbox One.

Remaking Shadow of the Colossus for PS4 Was a Tough “Balancing Act” for Bluepoint Games http://twinfinite.net/2017/12/shadow-of-the-colossus-ps4/ http://twinfinite.net/2017/12/shadow-of-the-colossus-ps4/#respond Sat, 16 Dec 2017 18:32:40 +0000 http://twinfinite.net/?p=320335 Bluepoint also looked into Horizon: Zero Dawn's bow mechanics.

The post Remaking Shadow of the Colossus for PS4 Was a Tough “Balancing Act” for Bluepoint Games appeared first on Twinfinite.

With developer Bluepoint Games remaking Shadow of the Colossus for today’s standards, the team found it difficult to make crucial changes while staying true to the original title.

Speaking to GameInformer, technical director Peter Dalton said improving the visuals and gameplay of Shadow of the Colossus while preserving its soul is Bluepoint’s priority. This has lead to plenty of internal discussions when making both major and minor changes to the game, such as the controls. “Redoing the controls is quite a big challenge,” said Dalton. ” Even looking at stuff like bow aiming. [Horizon: Zero Dawn] has an amazing bow and I love the system that they put together, but that sort of system doesn’t make sense in this game.”

Producer Randall Lowe said much attention has also been spent staying true to the original game’s presentation. “Their [Team Ico’s] design sensibilities were amazing,” said Lowe. “The use of coloring areas, the use of fog, the way they conveyed emotion without driving it through dialogue, they’re masters of it. Maintaining that is really hard. It is a lot of conscious work to make sure that just by beatifying something, just by brining it up to what people expect modern games to look like, you don’t break them. I think that’s the most time we spend internally.”

The team’s dedication to remain faithful to the original title extends to preserving the game’s beautiful secret areas. “We spent a lot of time making sure we were as aware of this stuff as the community was,” said Lowe. “We did our best to maintain the integrity of the original game. Without giving away anything, players should be able to expect that what they were able to do in the past should carry forward.”

While Shadow of the Colossus might look like it was built entirely from scratch, Dalton said the original code is actually still being used in the remake. Both the original and Bluepoint’s game engine were infused together, working simultaneously to process everything. With this, it’s a matter of weighing which aspects they should tweak or preserve. “It’s a balancing act of which systems do we keep from the original game and which systems do we replace. When it comes to rendering systems those are completely Bluepoint customized technology pieces. When it comes to animations, there are whole new animation systems underneath the hood, but at the game level it’s still the original game code that’s running.”

Shadow of the Colossus launches on Feb 6, 2018 exclusively for PS4. It will also have a special edition that includes physical and digital goodies.
