Guillermo Del Toro Speaks out over Silent Hills

He's just as disappointed as the rest of us.

Last month, Konami officially canceled the highly anticipated Silent Hills game which was revealed via a truly terrifying demo released on the PlayStation Store called P.T.

The P.T. demo revealed that not only was a new Silent Hills in the works, but also that it would be created by Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima and legendary film veteran Guillermo del Toro and feature The Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus.

As you can imagine, fans were beside themselves with excitement, but alas it all went wrong. Following the feud that is currently going on between Konami and Kojima, the game has been canceled and the P.T. demo pulled from the store. Gamers everywhere are devastated and so is del Toro.

In an interview with IGN, Del Toro expressed his regret over the cancellation of the game and said:

“The collaboration between Kojima and myself, the meetings, and the friendship that was developing was beautiful. We had an agreement on where to go. We had an agreement on how we were going to push the new platforms. We were having a blast.”

When asked exactly what he and Kojima were hoping to achieve with the game, Del Toro stated:

“What we wanted to do with the game – and we were very much in agreement on this – was to take the technology and make it as cutting-edge as we could in creating terror in the house. The idea was very, very atmosphere-drenched. But what made Silent Hill so great was that you had the atmosphere but then you a pay-off with a very active, very intense series of moments. We wanted to do some stuff that I’m pretty sure – just in case it ever comes back, which honestly I would love for somebody to change their mind and we can do it – but in case it comes back there was some stuff that was very new, and I wouldn’t want to spoil it.

“Norman [Reedus, the Walking Dead actor who was attached to play the lead role] was super happy, Hideo was super happy, and so was I. I know there’s a petition going on the internet and it’s gathering signatures. I would add my signature to it, and hope that someone pays attention.”

Silent Hills isn’t the first time Guillermo Del Toro has attempted to enter the world of video games. He was involved in a video game called Insane which was canceled in 2012 when the publisher THQ went under. When asked whether or not he’ll try again with video games, Del Toro said:

“Well, you know, I’ve tried twice and I don’t know if I’ll ever come back to the form. In one instance, the company went down, and in the second, the completely unexpected happened, which was Kojima and Konami separating. It’s kind of left me reeling.”

It’s a great shame to see a man so full of passion for a project be unable to fulfill it but there is some hope. At the end of the interview, Del Toro said:

“Hideo and I have been in touch, and he knows he would be the only guy I would follow to the ends of the earth on anything. I think if anything can be rescued, I will be more than happy.”

Silent Hills may not see the light of day, but it’s still possible that Hideo Kojima and Guillermo Del Toro will work together in the future.
