How to Do a Chain Attack in Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has a lot of moving parts to its complex battle system, and even has tutorials popping up well into the game. One of the final aspects of combat that comes together is chain attacks, which are massively powerful moves that use your entire party to unleash a sequence of arts on the enemy. Here’s what you need to know about them.

You’ll see a tutorial for chain attacks during Chapter 3 of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, but it can be a bit hard to remember all the info. To use a chain attack, your party gauge, the one in the top left corner, will need to be completely full. Keep in mind that this is the gauge you also use to revive downed party members, so you can leave yourself open by doing a chain attack. Once the gauge is full, simply hit the plus button to launch a chain attack. Now you’ll need to use A, B, X, and Y to choose a Blade to attack for each driver.

The trick for really dealing damage with chain attacks, however, comes to using bursts. When in normal combat, using a level 3 Blade art will apply a seal to the enemy, and cause an elemental orb to appear around them. This is when you want to launch a chain attack. What you need to do is choose a Blade with the opposite element of the orb hovering around the enemy. This can cause the orb to burst and cause massive damage to your target, as well as extend the length of your chain attack. You may not use chain attacks as often as the other aspects of Xenoblade Chronicles 2’s combat system, but make sure you keep them in mind for tougher enemies and boss battles.
