The venerable series is drawing to a close.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel is one of Falcom’s most recognizable JRPG properties, and they’re definitely worth playing through if you haven’t done so already. But it looks like the series is going to be coming to an end in the near future, unfortunately.
An interview with Falcom president and CEO Toshihiro Kondo revealed that the series was actually supposed to end with the third game, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III, but the developers though it would be “tough” to end with one title and make a difficult decision like that.
“After that sort of ending, I want to release the next title as soon as possible next year,” Kondo stated. The next game is coming for PlayStation 4 by September 2018, so that shouldn’t be an issue, but there’s no word on when to expect it for western fans just yet.
“(The next game) will truly be the last. We’re working for all the mysteries of the Empire Arc to reach the end of the line.”
While this series may be coming to an end, Falcom still has several other properties to explore, so this doesn’t have to be goodbye, but just the start of something new otherwise. Something you may even enjoy more in the future! Only time will tell.
