Super Mario Odyssey: How to Play Co-op as Cappy

How to Play Co-op as Cappy in Super Mario Odyssey

Recommended Videos

Super Mario Odyssey has finally been released, and players will be able to once go on a grand adventure with Mr. Super Mario. This time, he’s leaving the Mushroom Kingdom to explore other Kingdoms in pursuit of Princess Peach who has been kidnapped by Bowser. Shocking! However, Mario won’t be at it alone. There’s a new character, Cappy, who is magical hat that will ride along on Mario’s head throughout his adventure.

This sentient hat will help Mario control various objects all around Super Mario Odyssey. Things ranging from traffic cones to a giant T-Rex are all in play here.

What’s especially interesting is that Cappy can be controlled by another player character locally. Co-op in Super Mario Odyssey works like this: One player of course controls Mario, while the other controls Cappy. The player who is playing as Cappy will float above Mario’s head and is free to fly around and explore while collecting coins and other useful things for Mario.

To do this, select the Two Players option from the main menu. You can then split your joy cons up and set them to be played sideways (hold it sideways and press the L+R buttons on the back to do that) or you can use two sets of controllers. From there you can control your characters more or less as you normally would. Cappy can take flight using the left button on your personal d-pad and move using the analog. Cappy can fly off pretty much anywhere, but the action will stay focused on Mario throughout play.

That does it for how to play co-op in SMO. For more on Super Mario Odyssey, be sure to check out our wiki for more tips, tricks, and walkthroughs.
