Assassin’s Creed Origins lets players do a lot of things. You can scale pyramids, hunt hippos, take out a secret order, or just sit down and relax. That last one is something Bayek, the primary protagonist of Assassin’s Creed Origins, really enjoys. In fact, he likes it so much that it is the only time during gameplay where the troubled assassin cracks a smile.
Scattered throughout the beautifully recreated ancient Egypt are Hermit Locations. Select points in the world that are often distant from civilization and offer a moment’s respite from all the murdering and the blazing hot desert sun. When you find one of these locations, you simply need to locate the spot to sit and relax. It’s usually a red blanket with some flowers or incense nearby. Interact and Bayek will plop down and cross his legs as if meditating.
If you give it just a couple of seconds, the dangerous assassin will actually crack a smile that you can capture in a screenshot, but you have to be quick. He only smiles for a few seconds before his face returns to the usual intimidating scowl his enemies know him best for. It’s admittedly a bit creepy, especially after killing a whole troop of Roman soldiers or slaying a cackle of hyenas. Smiling is always a bit awkward in video games, but somehow seeing Bayek do it in Assassin’s Creed Origins put a smile on my face as well.
It’s great to see that Ubisoft provided a bright spot for someone going through something so dark. Good on you Bayek, and may you find more reasons to smile as the brotherhood grows.
