Yakuza Online Coming to PC and Smartphone Next Year

Yakuza Online Ichiban Kasuga

Yakuza for a hundred years, Mort!

The upcoming Yakuza 6: The Song of Life is slated to the last title in the series featuring Kazuma Kiryu as the protagonist. However, the developer, Sega, said the series will go on. The first game in the “New Yakuza Series” project will be Yakuza Online.

Yakuza Online will take place in the same universe as the other Yakuza games, and is set after the events of Yakuza 6. The title will center around a new threat to Kamurocho, Tokyo. The Omi Alliance, an organization that has been featured as antagonistic in previous games, has formed a pact with the police, and the Tojo Clan has lost control of the district.

In response to the Omi Alliance’s unwelcome presence in Kamurocho, a new character, Ichiban Kasuga, returns to push them out. Ichiban’s story seems a lot like Kiryu’s. He never knew his parents, he was rescued by Yakuza and ended up taking the blame for a crime he didn’t commit.

The title is said to be free-to-play with premium purchases for in-app items. How the “online” part of the title comes into play hasn’t been revealed yet, and we’re not quite sure whether it will feature classic Yakuza-style beat-em-up gameplay or be completely different. You can check out the prologue video below to get some extra backstory — if you can read Japanese.

Yakuza Online hasn’t been confirmed for a Western release yet, but it should be coming to Japan sometime in 2018.
