Pixelmon goes down after four years of development.
Pixelmon for Minecraft was one of the most well-developed mods for the voxel-based title. The Pokémon-style gameplay allowed players to capture Pokés, fight other trainers, and purchase familiar franchise items. Work on the mod began in 2013, but unfortunately, as of today the Pixelmon team are shutting down production due to a cease and desist from The Pokémon Company.
The official Pixelmon download has been taken down, and those wishing to play the last version of the mod, 5.1.2 will have to find the files elsewhere. Fans on both the Pixelmon forums and Minecraft subreddit are mourning the loss of the mod, and it’s not clear whether any additional updates, including new regions and monsters to capture, will ever see the light of day.
MrMasochist, an admin on the mod’s forums, had this to say:
“With much sadness, but keeping all our fond memories, we must announce that Pixelmon is ending its development. We have had a great time making this mod and creating such a wonderful community, but after a request from the Pokémon company we will be shutting our doors.”
If you still want to play Pixelmon, your best bet is to try and get involved with one of the groups that runs a dedicated Minecraft server for it. For the foreseeable future it looks like the mod is doomed to be another fan project cast into obscurity by the hands of the DMCA.
