Final Fantasy XII Zodiac Age: How to Get and Use Quickenings

How to Get and Use Quickenings in Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age

The battle system in Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age gives you quite a few different options for taking down enemies. One of those options is something called Quickenings, which function almost like Limit Breaks do in other Final Fantasy games. These are powerful attacks that can be chained together through multiple characters to devastating effects, but you will need to unlock them first.

You’ll gain access to Quickenings early on in The Zodiac Age, after about 8 hours or so. To get them, you’ll first need to unlock the node on the License Board. Quickenings will appear as fiery red orbs and require a certain amount of LP to unlock. There are three tiers of Quickenings for each character, with the price for each purchase increasing. It’s in your best interest to unlock each character’s Quickenings as early as possible, as they’ll do nothing but help you in battle.

Once you unlock a Quickening you’ll see a new sort of MP bar appear on your character. This bar fills as you battle enemies, and you can have up to three corresponding to the tiers of Quickenings in Final Fantasy XII. The level 3 Quickening will take up all three bars to use, level 2 will take 2, and level 1 will only take one.

To use Quickenings in The Zodiac Age bring up the battle menu with X and select Mist, then you’ll see the option. Using the move takes you to a separate screen where you’ll see the attack play out. At the bottom you’ll notice a menu with all of your party member’s names and moves. If everyone in your active party has a Quickening, they can be used. Hit the corresponding button next to a character’s name to queue their move up next. If the names on the bar are grey, you can hit the R2 button to randomize the list and try and get a Quickening to pop up. This is where you need to be fast, as the bar is on a timer.

Hitting R2 will shuffle the list, sometimes getting a move to instantly pop up. However, you may also see an option appear next to a name that says Mist Charge, after a character has already used up all their Quickening MP. Tap the corresponding button and the character will get a quick charge to their MP, allowing another move option to pop up.

It’s important to keep all these factors in mind when you’re using Quickenings. Be aware of which moves are taking up MP, and using the shuffle to try and maximize your chains. If you’re fast and lucky enough you can chain big amounts of Quickenings, upwards of 10, and cause massive damage even to boss enemies.

That’s all you need to know to get and use Quickenings in the game. For more tips and guides on Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, make sure to check back with Twinfinite.
