Sega Forever is Bringing Sega’s Greatest Hits to Mobile

Sega is making it easier than ever to delve into its cache of classic games.

Sega is bringing a glut of its massive back catalogue to iOS and Android in the form of Sega Forever, a new initiative that aims to bring Sega classics to mobile devices for free.

Beginning on Thursday, Sega Forever will be available with its first batch of games, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Phantasy Star II, Altered Beast, Comix Zone and Kid Chameleon. Each game will be available to download for free, but you can pay $1.99 to turn off ads. The titles will support cloud saves, online leaderboards, Bluetooth controller support, and offline play should you need to conserve data.

The plan is for the Sega Forever collection to grow and expand over the next few years with “both official emulations and ported games that pan all Sega console eras, each adapted specifically for mobile devices while remaining faithful to the original games.” Essentially, the games will all be optimized for mobile devices. That’s great news if you primarily game on the go.

After the first five games are launched tomorrow, the collection will grow about every two weeks, with games pulled from Sega’s storied history including titles we’ve never seen in the West before. So if you’ve been looking for a reason to travel through time back to some of Sega’s best, this is a great way to thumb through the pages of the company’s history — especially with Comix Zone, which is excellent in its own right.
