Indie Game Prey For The Gods Drops “Prey” From its Name Due to Bethesda’s Trademark Opposition

prey for the gods

Prey. What a unique and uncommon word in the English language.

Prey For The Gods is an upcoming indie title from developer No Matter Studios. It’s meant to be a game that calls back to and pays tribute to the iconic Shadow of the Colossus. However, the developers have since been asked to change the game’s name, and it’s now rebranded as Praey For The Gods.

As it turns out, Bethesda has asked them to change the name because of the word “prey,” which is the name of their latest horror shooter game.

‘We could’ve fought this and we did think about it for quite a while. Something like a trademark opposition can be long and depending on how far someone wants to fight it can be very expensive. We didn’t want to spend our precious Kickstarter funds, nor did we want to have to ask for additional funds to fight this in court. Using backer money towards something that doesn’t go towards the development or backer rewards felt horrible to us. Even if we did win we’d have to spend a solid chunk of our funds and in our opinion it wasn’t worth it.’

Praey For The Gods doesn’t have a solid release date just yet, but it should be getting its closed alpha fairly soon.
