Unlocking Gold Mario in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Recommended Videos

While all of the DLC characters, karts, and parts are made available to you from the very start of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, you’ll still have to put in some work if you want to get your hands on the much coveted Gold Mario character. Gold Mario is a new unlockable character introduced in Deluxe, and it’s only meant for the most hardcore of karters.

To unlock this character, all you have to do is finish in first place in all of the 200cc races available in the game. It sounds simple, but actually achieving this feat is no easy matter. Your AI opponents will constantly bombard you with shells, and the most notorious of all is the blue shell that blasts lightning at you. Having a mushroom will allow you to boost out of the blast radius, and give you a bit of an edge in the race. Alternatively, you can also turn on Smart Steering to make sure that you’re always on the course, with no chance of getting knocked into the wrong direction.

In order to unlock the 200cc races, you’ll need to complete the Grand Prix for the 50cc, 100cc, and 150cc tracks first.
