NieR: Automata – Switching Characters

Recommended Videos

NieR: Automata gives you the opportunity to play as three different characters throughout the course of the story. They are 2B, 9S, and A2. As you play through the game multiple times, the game will force you to switch between them during key points. When this happens, there’s no way to freely switch back to another character until the game offers you the option again.

However, after clearing your third run and getting either Endings C or D, you’ll unlock a Chapter Select function that can be accessed from the main menu. From here, you’ll be able to jump to any point in the story and play a specific chapter. That said, this does come with some limitations as well. For instance, you can only play as a certain character if they were available in the chapter you chose. This means that you can’t simply choose to play as A2 during the game’s prologue, where only 2B and 9S were present. Still, this is a pretty good way to return to the game and clear up any side missions you might have skipped previously.
