How to Beat Thunderjaws Easily – Horizon Zero Dawn

Recommended Videos

Arguably the most terrifying machine you’ll encounter in Horizon Zero Dawn, Thunderjaws pose a huge threat to Aloy as she explores the world. These t-rex machines have an extensive arsenal of firepower at their disposal, but they’re not without their weaknesses. Here’s how you can beat Thunderjaws easily in Horizon Zero Dawn.

When you first jump into battle with Thunderjaws, make sure you keep your distance. It’ll give you more time to read its attacks and dodge them, and you’ll be using the Sharpshot bow first anyway, so landing hits won’t be a problem.

When you’re ready, you want to press R3 to use your Focus and highlight a Thunderjaw’s weak points. These, for the most part, are its weapons, and those Disc Launchers on its shoulders are going to be the first thing we take care of. Using Tearblast arrows, land consecutive hits on the Disc Launchers until they’re both remove and on the floor. Make a mental note of where they land in case you get chased and need to move, we’ll come back to these in a moment.

Make your way over to the Launchers that are now on the floor. You can actually pick these up with Triangle, and luckily for Aloy, they deal huge amounts of damage. For this, you can stay relatively close to Thunderjaws, as long as you’re able to land a hit in before they manage to on you. Once you’ve landed one hit, you’ll be able to bombard it with more fire before it has the chance to recover. Each landed hit racks up about 150-200 points of damage, so unload this Disc Launcher and then pick up the other.

If the Thunderjaws are still standing, get some distance between you again and set up some Blast Tripwires. Then, position yourself on the other side of the tripwire and lure the Thunderjaws through it. A couple of these should be more than enough to drain the remaining health of the Thunderjaw you’re facing.

That’s all there is to easily beating Thunderjaws in Horizon Zero Dawn. For more tips, tricks, and information on the game, including how to take down more machines easily, be sure to check out our ever-expanding wiki guide.
