The Kickstarter success is nearly here.
Playtonic Games has announced that their first title, Yooka-Laylee, has officially gone gold. The title was announced two years ago in May 2015 as a kind of spiritual successor the the popular Banjo-Kazooie franchise, and almost immediately hit its Kickstarter goal. Playtonic thanked fans with the following statement,
“Almost two years since Playtonic announced itself to the world – and 21 months since our Kickstarter campaign – we’re absolutely delighted to announced that Yooka-Laylee has gone gold!
We couldn’t have reached this moment without the incredible support of our backers, fans, family and friends across the games industry. Thanks again for your unwavering enthusiasm for our studio. We hope you enjoy Yooka-Laylee when it releases on April 11!”
Yooka-Laylee is a 3D platforming adventure game, that has you controlling two characters simultaneously, who each have specific roles and abilities. Playtonic Games was founded by former key members of Rare, who want to bring back the “collect-a-thon” style of games.
Additionally, it looks like the studio has added yet another key member that used to work at Rare. Justin Cook was the lead designer for the Viva Pinata series, released on Xbox 360 and PC. Cook talked about his reason behind joining Playtonic, “I came to Playtonic because I like working ‘hands on’ with a game as part of a small team of experts. Joining Playtonic now, feels like a chance to ‘be-there’ at the start of something special.”
Yooka-Laylee is set to release on Apr. 11, 2017 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. While you’re at it, make sure to take a look at the recently announced multiplayer arcade games shown off for the title.
