In a press release, Sony announced that the PlayStation 4 has sold over 53 million units as of Jan. 1st, 2017. Sales of the popular console increased greatly during the holidays, as they sold more than 6.2 million units during that period of time.
This would put the PS4 as the third best selling console, behind its predecessors and the PlayStation Portal. Of course, fans would have to keep in mind that the console is only in its fourth year since being released, meaning it still has plenty of time of catch up to other best-selling consoles that have been discontinued.
“We are truly grateful for the tremendous support from our fans and partners, which has helped to make this holiday season one of the best in our history,” said Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment. “We will aim to continue the momentum this year by broadening the PS4 title portfolio, further enriching the revolutionary gaming experiences on PlayStation VR and high quality gaming experience on PlayStation 4 Pro, while also expanding network services. We will remain steadfast in making the PS4 the best place to play.”
Sony also stated that “software sales remained strong” this holiday season. They did not state how much was sold in retail and how much was sold digitally.
