Spider-Man: Homecoming Gives the Wall-Crawler His Classic Web Wings

The flying spider.

Today in Sao Paolo, Brazil, Marvel showed off a clip of their new superhero film, Spider-Man: Homecoming. Though there’s no official video of the footage yet, Marvel’s Ryan Penagos recapped the event over on his Twitter, where he revealed that the web wings would make their debut to the films, inspired by Steve Ditko’s original design for the wall-crawler and previously seen in the Spectacular cartoon from a few years back. The in-film explanation for this is that Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) gives Peter (Tom Holland) a new “upgrade” to his suit.

The web wings make it clear that Ditko is the prime inspiration for Spider-Man this time around, in case the movement of the eyes from Captain America: Civil War didn’t make that clear. (Civil War directors Joe and Anthony Russo openly stated that Ditko was their inspiration for the design of the Spider suit.) Given that Peter will be going up against both the Vulture and Tinkerer, he’ll probably need all the upgrades that he can get.

Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters on July 5, 2017.
