Considering how many people it felt had been crying out for a serious Pokemon fighting game, Pokken Tournament kinda came and went in the blink of an eye. Developed by Bandai Namco, the game essentially brought a number of Pokemon into a Tekken-style fighter where each ‘mon had a variety of button combos and a differing fighting style to master. The game was received relatively positively by both critics and players, scoring 76 and 80 on Metacritic respectively.
Ultimately, its downfall could potentially lie in its limited roster or Pokken’s release just after The Division which, while not a long-term success, may have swallowed attention at the time. Combined with the small install base of the Wii U, and Pokken Tournament couldn’t get enough traction to be remembered for long enough. Perhaps we’ll see a Switch version instead.
