Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse – How to Change the Difficulty

Need a breather?

The Shin Megami Tensei series is renowned for its high difficulty level, and Apocalypse is no different. It can be a punishingly difficult game, especially in the boss battle department.

Luckily, if Apocalypse’s difficulty ends up just being a bit much at times, you can slide things down a notch. The three difficulty levels in Apocalypse are as follows: skirmish, conflict, and war. They each correspond to easy, medium, and hard, respectively. There’s a handy feature that lets you change between these three difficulties at absolutely any time in the game, and you don’t lose any rewards or bonuses from combat by changing to any difficulty.

To change the difficulty, just hit the Y button to bring up the main menu, then navigate over to the “system” menu all the way on the right. Once you’re there, just select the “difficulty” tab and presto, you can switch between all three. The different levels in Apocalypse really only serve for players to challenge themselves however they want. So if you want to keep the entire game intensely difficult the whole time through just keep it on conflict or war. But if you want to skip a crushing boss battle to see more of the story, just flip it down to skirmish and don’t worry about losing out on anything.
