SEGA Goes Back to 1996 to Create the Sonic Mania Collector’s Edition Infomercial We Needed to See

The Sonic Mania Collector’s Edition was already looking pretty enticing, its contents including retro gems like a golden Sonic ring, cartridge, and replica Sega Genesis complete with startup noise. But for those who aren’t yet convinced of the glory of the 90s, SEGA’s released a 1996 infomercial that puts to reset many common concerns (including ours) with the collector’s edition. Concerns like “does it remove wine stains?” and “will it get me engaged?”

The answer is yes, the Sonic Mania Collector’s Edition will definitely do both of those things. But the uses don’t stop there – the space age polymer cardboard casing is the perfect surface for supporting a tackle box, and the Sonic Mania Collector’s Edition is “humanely raised, free range, and organic.” It also cooks eggs maybe.

The entire video is really a throwback to 1992, when SEGA released a similar commercial for Sonic 2, lauding its ability to chop vegetables and cover bald spots.

The Collector’s Edition will ship Spring 2017, and pre-orders for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC are now open. There’s no word on how many editions will be available, though the Sonic website notes it will be “available only for a limited time.”

Sonic Mania is a classic 2D adventure featuring new stages and re-imagined classics like Green Hill Zone. The game was revealed back at SEGA’s 25th anniversary party alongside “Project Sonic 2017,” a mysterious title coming to the NX.
