The PS4 Pro Has 4K Capabilities, But Isn’t an Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player

PS4 Pro, Ultra HD Blu-ray

An important difference to remember.

Today’s PlayStation Meeting finally saw the unveiling of the long-rumored, more powerful PlayStation 4 console. While Sony’s fancy new machine will offer 4K and HDR capabilities, it’s important to know that this doesn’t mean that the new system will play Ultra HD Blu-rays.

The news comes from Engadget’s reporters at the event who asked the direct question as to whether or not the system is an Ultra HD Blu-ray player. According to the folks over at Engadget, they confirmed that the PS4 Pro is in fact, not capable of playing the new Ultra HD- Blu-ray media.

While this may be a disappointment to some, there is a silver lining. Both Netflix and YouTube were both announced to be coming to the PS4 Pro with new and updated 4K apps capable of making the most of the Pro’s additional horsepower. Netflix, in particular, will be getting incredible support, with over 600 hours of content being made available to stream in 4K. Both Narcos Season 2, and upcoming Marvel series, Luke Cage, will both be a part of this content.

What do you make of this news? Will you be picking up a Pro when it releases in November? Let us know in the comments below.

Thanks, Engadget!
