As Gamescom gets set to kick off, Blizzard Entertainment has debuted a brand new Overwatch preview video, showing off a map that will soon be added to the game. The Eichenwalde map has been divulged by the company to be an Assault/Escort hybrid map set in an abandoned village just outside of Stuttgart, Germany.
The setting is canonically where one of the most famous battles took place in the Omnic Crisis. The Overwatch legend says the building at the center of the preview trailer is where the commander of the Crusaders was able to take his squad and hold up against the Automaton army. Taking a page from American history’s Alamo; apparently, the squadron was eventually killed, but their stand allowed the German military to take back the region from the Automatons.
The Overwatch trailer doesn’t show any combat, but it does lay out the various twists and turns on the map, including the battering ram that plays a starring role in this mode. Blizzard has laid out the goals of this Overwatch mode saying, “On this map, one team must escort a battering ram to Eichenwalde Castle to reclaim Balderich’s remains from their current resting place, while the opposing team does everything in its power to thwart the keep from being breached.”
While Eichewalde is marked as “coming soon,” there is not yet an announced launch date. This will be the first new map in Overwatch since the game went live.
