A step away from the large AAA games we are used to seeing from Insomniac, Song of the Deep is something new for the developer. That’s a fact readily apparent in the game’s launch trailer, which showcases the mix of gorgeous backdrops and maniacal levels players will get to transverse when the game releases next week.
A metroidvania-style game, Song of the Deep is the latest from Ratchet and Clank, Resistance, and Sunset Overdrive developer Insomniac Games. It follows a young girl, Merryn, as she pilots a submarine down into the ocean depths in search of her father. “Along the way, she’ll make friends, discover lost civilizations and ruins, and upgrade her submarine to explore even deeper. The terrain and monsters of the deep are daunting, but Merryn’s courage, intelligence, and love for her father will help her overcome adversity,” the game’s description reads.
The title is also the first to be published by GameStop. Part of a new direction for the retailer, GameStop is not only publishing the game, but will be selling the only physical copies, along with additional merchandise.
Song of the Deep releases July 12 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
