Yooka-Laylee’s E3 Trailer Channels Banjo-Kazooie Nostalgia

Yooka-Laylee, confirmed, Xbox One, title, 2016

This sure seems familiar.

Yooka-Laylee the upcoming platformer and spiritual successor to the older Rare platformers, has received a brand new gameplay trailer ahead of E3. Playtonic Games, the team behind Yooka-Laylee is also made up of former Rare staff and some of the minds behind the Donkey Kong Country games and Banjo-Kazooie.

The new E3 trailer gives us a look at the game’s pair of heroes, Yooka and Laylee, as they platform and roll around a few different levels. Yooka the Chameleon has a useful looking ability where he can turn into a ball and roll up certain areas in the environment, also increasing the character’s speed.

There are plenty of little things mixed into the trailer that are reminiscent of Rare’s previous games. There’s a minecart sequence straight out of Donkey Kong Country, and a snow level that looks a bit like Freezeezy Peak minus the snowman. The end of the video even has Yooka and Laylee talking to each other with the traditional Banjo-Kazooie noises to go along with it. Take a look at the trailer down below.

Yooka-Laylee will now release in Q1 of 2017, Playtonic Games and publisher Team17 recently announced the delay. The game will be coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U and PC.
